Every high school student at MHS is offered the resource to take college classes through Muscatine Community College. There are many courses to choose from: basic STEM classes, to different majors you may be looking at going to college for. There is really something for everyone.
Some students might think they don’t need college classes or don't have time for them, but it is a great way to get introduced to college level courses, and do it for free.
Mrs. Karey Hawkins, a counselor at the high school, who schedules college classes and helps with any questions a student may have including many reasons as to why you should take MCC classes during high school.
Students get the opportunity to experience a college level course while having the support of MHS and MCC staff.
Students get experience using Canvas, a program they will likely use in any post secondary training or education experience they pursue
The cost of tuition and textbooks is covered for the students by the school district. This can be considered a scholarship!
Gives the student the opportunity to complete prerequisites and general education courses while in high school so that they can get into the classes for their major, the classes they are excited about taking, sooner.
Gives students the opportunity to explore major interest areas prior to enrolling in college full time.
Many students find these resources helpful like junior, Grace Miller.
“I wanted to take a college class because I wanted to get my gen ed classes out of the way. I will just have more time when I actually go to college to take the classes that I want,” said Grace.
Not only does MCC offer general education classes, they also offer some unique classes(LINK). There are online and in-person classes.
There are a lot of pros to taking a college class, but it truly isn't for everybody. Some people just genuinely don't have time.
“I have a full schedule with music classes and all of the other required classes I have to take,” said junior, Karen West.
Others just don't feel like they need to take them.
“I personally would just rather take the courses I need to graduate high school than take a college class,” said junior, Chevy Palmer.
For some people college isn't the route they want to take in life. They want to go to high school then get into the workplace right away.
Not everybody wants to take college classes in high school, which is totally okay. It is just a great resource to have.
