Title 9 is an organization that protects students from sex discrimination, and requires schools to take prompt and action to end it in their education programs. Over the last year, the Department has heard from a wide variety of stakeholders, including students, parents, and educators in elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools, state government representatives, advocates, lawyers, researchers, and other stakeholders through the Title IX nationwide virtual public hearing in June 2021 convened by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and in numerous listening sessions and meetings.
Our school has also brought Title 9 to our sports teams, Mr. Henson says it was to bring awareness to the law being enforced.
Mr. Henson explains what the shirt represents :“Our hope is that our girls feel honored, with a sense of pride knowing what these shirts represent.”
Why would it be important to represent this movement?
Mike Henson said, “Title IX is a very important piece of our country's history when it comes to gender equality. In 1972, there were 300,000 women playing High School and College sports in the US. That number has risen to over 3 million. We went from 1 in 27 girls participating before this bill to 1 in 5 today.”
The title IV movement and the difference it will make.
“We don't necessarily think it will "make a difference" as much as we just wanted to bring about awareness of the law's importance and celebrate all of the positive effects it has had for women's athletics.” Henson said.
JV volleyball player Nicole Guevara, junior, explains her experience in volleyball and how she feels about Title IV.
“I started volleyball in middle school, and I have played every year since then.”
Title IV means a lot to Nicole because she is passionate about this movement.
She said, “With me being involved in sports Title IV is important to me because if anything sexist is going on, or someone is being rude, the school has to take care of it and it makes me feel a sense of protection. If that's what you want to call it.”
Nicole talks about how Title IV plays into her volleyball career, how the shirts that Sports Director Mike Henson purchased.
“The shirts that he (Mr. Henson) purchases are really important to me and the team, because it represents a good movement and we as a team feel honored to represent it.”
Nicole’s favorite part about being on the Volleyball team is the relationships that she forms through the team.
“Being able to get closer with my teammates because they are really funny and make me want to keep playing” said Nicole.
While Nicole enjoys playing the sport, there are times where she gets frustrated, she says she is her biggest critic.
Nicole says, “I’m always trying to stay positive on the court, but if I make a few mistakes on the field you can usually tell right away, I’ve always been hard on myself. But usually I try to not let that affect the way I play for the rest of the set.”
