Colin Millage is a sophomore here at MHS, he is involved in many academic, as well as athletic activities. But he isn’t any person who tries out sports. Colin is an active participant in the swim, he is very dedicated. His qualifications for the state competition exemplify his dedication.
Everyone has to start somewhere for a sport. Colin started at the ripe age of six.
“My sister originally was in the swim, my mom automatically put me into swimming when I was that age. I am forever grateful that she did that," said Colin.
Swimming during childhood can end up in two different ways, you can grow strong and develop through it. Or it could slowly burn out.
“I was very competitive as a child. I always got first place and it was always so fun. It was my favorite thing to do. But when I was ten, I met a certain coach that made me want to quit the sport I loved. She would make us wear headsets and yell at us when we would do anything. Then if we did something wrong, she would ignore me,” said Colin.
Motivation differs from person to person. It could be family, friends, career, or even winning.
“Recognition is something that drives me. Getting the love and attention of people who realize how hard I work. But over that, my love for the sport tops it all,” Colin said, “My favorite thing about the sport is getting to hang out with my friends who are also involved with swim.¨
Working hard pays off whether it's in the pool or in school. Colin besides being a state qualifier is also an honor roll student. Colin has made it to state both his freshman and sophomore year of high school.
Colin qualified in the 200-meter, which he had gotten second place in freestyle and 100-meter backstroke. “I knew I was going to make a statement if I am being completely honest. I don’t mean to sound conceited but I was not surprised. I worked hard, and my times were consistently good.”
Though Colin is a very talented swimmer, like many other people, he had to choose whether or not to continue his sport during college.
“I sadly do not plan on continuing swim during college, I would rather focus on my career as an anesthesiologist.”
Though his swimming career is going to take a halt at the end of High-school, during his time here at the High-school he is going to give it his all. Great job at state!
