Lucas Hardy and Aubrey Haney recount their experience going through the motions of Senior Survivor as the only team made up of a genuine couple.
Senior year has been a stressful time for most 2023 students, from seemingly endless college and scholarship applications, to making sure all of your debts to MHS are paid off before diving into one of the most significant debts of your life if you don’t get a full ride to school. And if you’re not preparing for college, you’re preparing for a trade school or getting ready for a career that doesn’t require schooling. But in the mists of all of this chaos of senior year comes Senior Survivor.
Senior Survivor, a tradition for MHS since 2010, is a competition with the idea of showing a group of seniors what hardships a lot of students at MHS go through on a daily basis for a week towards the end of February or the start of March. Teams will sign up in January, usually a pair consisting of a boy and a girl, and fundraise for a charity of their choice. From there, the top 5 teams who raised the most money will make it into the actual competition of Senior Survivor where they will continue to raise funds until the end of the week.
One of the teams that caught the attention of many was the team consisting of Lucas Hardy and Aubrey Haney, the only couple this year that is made up of an actual couple. A lot of people say that with sleep deprivation and hungriness, it is easy to end up bickering and arguing about things that usually wouldn’t matter to them, or potentially even larger issues that turn into larger arguments. However, it never seemed to be a problem for this team.
“While there had been times when we would misunderstand what the other was saying or talking about, we never really argued or bickered about anything. We were always warned that we would argue and get upset with each other but that was never really a problem for us,” Aubrey said.
“Yeah, we’ve always been super close, so even with our misunderstandings they never really turned into full-blown arguments where we would be genuinely mad at each other,” Lucas agreed.
But being a couple isn’t the only reason why this pair teamed up for Senior Survivor, in fact: this team has been made since freshman year.
“We’ve actually been planning to do this together since freshman year, we’ve always just worked well together as a team, even before we were a couple, so we’ve had this planned out for a while,” Aubrey said.
But now that Senior Survivor has come and gone, it’s important to reflect on how the teams performed this year and how they felt about the outcome of Senior Survivor.
“We’re really happy with the outcome of Senior Survivor. I think we definitely worked great together during the competition and fundraising-wise. It was very cool and reading to be able to raise as much as we did for Micaela’s Hope. We both helped push each other past our limits without getting on each other’s nerves in the process. Overall it’s an experience that I wouldn’t change or trade for the world” Aubrey said on the outcome of Senior Survivor.
Overall, it was a very interesting and challenging week for the seniors participating in Senior Survivor, but those hardships didn’t get in the way of this couple and their determination to raise as much money as possible for their team’s charity.
