Prom is part of the High School experience. For many, the process of finding the perfect outfit, the perfect makeup, and hairdo is the best part of the night. Finding the best outfit can be very challenging though. So sometimes it’s better to take matters into your own hands!

“At first I started joking with my friends, saying that I should just make my own instead but then they thought I could actually do it,” said Estella Bland.
Estella is one of our fellow writers in The Auroran Today. She is also known to be the founder of our Ethnic Club and is very active in our student body. But if you don’t know Estella personally, you may recognize her for her iconic outfits and stunning makeup looks.
She is a girl full of many creative ideas, but surprisingly she didn’t have an exact plan of what she envisioned for her prom dress.
“I did a quick sketch, bought the fabric, bought a sewing machine and just sort of guessed. I didn't use a pattern or measure anything, I just sort of eyeballed it,” said Estella.
Estella says she had never used a sewing machine all by herself before, let alone make her own dress. Not having a concrete plan gave her as much room to do whatever she wanted to.
“I tried not to create a specific idea of what the dress should look like and instead just sort of let the dress become whatever it did,” Estella said.
Although it was her first time using a sewing machine and making clothing, there weren’t really any big struggles.
“There weren't any mishaps really, mostly just me being a beginner and forgetting to hem edges or hide seams. Nothing that made me want to stop and give up,” said Estella.
It only took her three days for her to finish the masterpiece. Once the dress was done, Estella was extremely proud of herself, as she should.
“Overall the experience was a lot of fun and I'm pretty proud of myself. I also think it's just pretty cool to be able to say that I made my prom dress,” Estella said.
