Happy homecoming week! Finally it has approached and we are all excited for the upcoming activities, but we can’t forget about everything we do to prepare for this week. Whether it’s buying your outfit, reserving a restaurant, or proposing to your date for the dance.
A homecoming proposal usually consists of a person asking their significant other or friend to the homecoming dance using a sign. The sign will most likely have a quote or catchphrase that relates to something the person enjoys or an activity that they participate in. And the same thing goes for 'promposals'.
Homecoming (or prom) proposals can be very interesting. Some people go all out and ask someone using fire or during a football game on the field. Although these are nice gestures, some people think homecoming proposals can be embarrassing.
Unique promposal burning for an answer.
40% of students at MHS voted that they would rather not be proposed to for homecoming with a sign.
Senior at MHS, Hayley Carnithan, shared that they think homecoming proposals are uncomfortable.
“They pressure people into saying yes because it’s usually asked in front of a crowd,” said Hayley. “I would say no if someone asked me. That makes me very uncomfortable.”
On the other side of things, 60% of students think homecoming proposals are nice and would want to be asked with a sign.
Alanah Dolan, a junior at MHS, thinks homecoming proposals are a nice gesture.
“I think it's a cute concept that someone is going out of their way to ask you, especially if you aren't dating,” said Alanah. “I was asked with a sign last year, and it was pretty funny.”
When asking someone, it’s all about being creative. Limit your research online and try to think of something original.
“For me, I think the ideal way to be asked would be in a funny and creative way. I think that it makes it so much more special if someone can understand your sense of humor and ask you to homecoming in a way that they know will make you laugh. It doesn't need to be a great big gesture, just something that they know will make you smile. Preferably original too. If I can find it on Pinterest it definitely loses some brownie points,” Alanah said.
Working up the courage to ask someone with a sign is impressive. Junior at MHS, Jovani Romo, shared that this year was his first time asking someone to the homecoming dance.
“I thought it was perfect timing to ask my friend since we have fun together and I enjoy talking to them,” said Jovani. “It was definitely nerve racking. I went to their house and showed them the sign. Luckly, they loved it and said yes.”
Putting thought into the proposal is what counts most. Jovani shared that adding a gift along with the sign makes it just a little more sweet.
“I had to prepare very fast since I always wait until the last second. I decided to add flowers and candy as well with the sign. The poster I made looked decent but I am not very artistic. I’m just glad they liked it,” said Jovani.
Regardless if you have a date or not, the dance is going to be so much fun! Don’t forget to show your Muskie spirit by going to the homecoming game this Friday and dance on Saturday!
