This past Monday, the Board of Education held their monthly meeting. On the agenda - every month - is the MCS Learning Continuity Plan (LCP). Last month, the School Board voted to extend the LCP which extended the Virtual Wednesdays. The results from Monday's meeting were not the same.
This discussion started with Ms. Rollins, Mr. Gerbe, and Elise Tackett speaking about their experiences with Virtual Wednesdays and how it has helped them with their roles in the school community. The members of the board were thankful for sharing their opinion.
After Dr. Bezeau, the Superintendent of Schools, finished presenting the LCP Dashboard, there was discussion from the board regarding the decision they were about to make. After Dr. Bezeau's recommendation to amend the Learning Continutity Plan, the board ultimately voted as follows:
President Ryan Novess - Y
Vice-President Mike Austin - Y
Secretary Brandon Woods - Y
Treasurer Corey Horky - Y
Trustee Rebecca Harvey - N
Trustee Michael Tindall - N
Trustee Kody Naylor - Y
The end result of the vote was 5-2 carring the motion to amend the Learning Continutity Plan, including the removal of Virtual Wednesdays. This change will take place starting in March, with the first in-person Wednesday on March 3rd.
This vote resulted in students taking to social media, starting a petiton called "Keep Virtual Wednesdays." The petition states: "This has helped people out majorly during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The pandemic has not been easy for anyone and the answer to it is not to add another day for kids and teachers to worry about. The second semester has already begun - the last thing they need to worry about is how to totally flip their schedule. It is unethical to put someone through these rapid changes ESPECIALLY during this pandemic. Virtual Wednesday's help clean the school, give students and teachers breathing room, and help stop the spread of COVID-19. Now is not the time to change." 325 parents, students, and community members have signed the petition since its postage on Monday night.
