BEGIN WITH DESTINY DISCOVER
A good place to browse for an eBook collected by our school and our district is in Destiny Discover. Destiny Discover is our school's online library catalog and students locate print and online materials using it. Students sign-in to the online library catalog with their six digit student number and MCPS password. Once students are signed-in, they can view how many print books they have borrowed from the media center and read or borrow eBooks.
Borrowing and returning print books is no mystery. However, locating and borrowing an eBook is a little mysterious, at first. Students will find eBooks in different formats, from different suppliers, and with different restrictions in Destiny Discover. All eBooks can be read in a browser and some can be downloaded to a Kindle or another reading app. Some eBook titles are set for multiple users and some are set for one user at a time. Some eBooks have time limits on how long you can borrow them and some don't. How do you know which eBook does what when?
MULTIUSER EBOOKS
eBooks from Rourke, MackinVia, and ePointPlus are multiuser books that don't have a time limit on how long you can read them. You will have to sign-in to Destiny Discover to read these eBooks. For example, Our Minecraft Unicorn can be read by more than one Monocacy student at one time.
SINGLE USER EBOOKS
eBooks from Follett are single user books that can borrowed from two to three weeks before the OverDrive (Follett) system automatically returns the book. If a reader wants to continue reading the book, they'll have to borrow it again. Users can also place holds on these eBooks. eBooks from Follett can be found in Destiny Discover. The student is sent to OverDrive to borrow the eBook and to view student account information for digital materials. For example, Sharks is a Follett title that has to be borrowed by the reader and returned in three weeks. Students can place holds on Follett titles like Sharks in OverDrive or Sora.
DESTINY DISCOVER, OVERDRIVE, AND SORA
Students will find all the eBooks bought by our school or our district in Destiny Discover. However, not all eBooks bought by our school or district will be in OverDrive, a Follett application. OverDrive and SORA are two eBook and audiobook platforms owned and operated by Follett. SORA is the student friendly app that allows Monocacy students to borrow single user eBooks. Students can access Follett books on Destiny Discover or they can sign-in to SORA directly to find Follett eBooks available to Monocacy students.
Through an agreement with MCPL, MCPS students can link to Follett titles offered by MCPL whether or not students have public library card accounts. For more information about OverDrive and SORA, visit this page https://resources.overdrive.com/k-12-schools/apps-features-apps/ .
