Middlesex County Magnet Schools is offering an Early Career Exploration Institute for any student residing in Middlesex County who has completed Grade 7 and is preparing for Grade 8, with an interest in exploring Career and Technical Education (CTE).

The goal of the Early Career Exploration Institute is to expose students to Career and Technical Education while providing the opportunity to develop critical skills through a combination of classes and hands-on learning experiences, which allow them to apply academics to solving real-world problems.

Agriscience Technology
Explore the various career pathways in the Agriscience Technology program. These areas will cover food science, plant & animal science, and floral design. Students will work in groups to complete lab activities and record their findings. They will also have a chance to create their own experiment!

Automotive Technology
This program's main feature is introducing Automotive Technician Career skills and many career opportunities in the transportation industry. Young learners will learn Technician, Life, and Consumer Skills. Amongst the three pillars, pillar one includes utilizing vehicle service tools and equipment to develop tech skills. Pillar two comprises oil changes, flat tire changes, and jumpstart dead vehicles, to name a few. Pillar three forms skills of examining the condition of a car and identifying worn vehicle components. Class procedures will begin with safety training and scale up as skill development competency is rooted.
The students will leave with newly acquired talents preparing them for vehicle purchases, maintenance, and roadside emergencies. Pupils learn at an accommodated pace, guided by an ASE Certified Master Technician.

Construction Maintenance and Design
"Come Sail Away!"
During this 3-week program, students will collaborate and work as a team to build a nesting pram (dinghy boat). We will learn lapStitch technique as well as other skills necessary to complete the project. Together, we will read blueprints and create a workplan to complete the boat during the program.
We will learn safety in the work place, time management, plan collaboratively, demonstrate perseverance, and exhibit grit! These skills can be applied to all future careers and are particularly important in the construction industry.

Explore Culinary Arts
Students will have the opportunity to learn about diverse cuisines, ingredients, and cooking techniques while also learning various aspects of the culinary business. Through hands-on activities, they will experiment with creating new dishes, developing recipes, and understanding the fundamentals of running a food-related enterprise.
This program aims to ignite students' passion for culinary arts while fostering creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial skills from an early age.

Digital Filmmaking
This course provides theory and practice of Film/Photography and Audio/Video production. It will emphasize students in becoming both a competent technician as well as a thinking producer.
Early Career Exploration Institute students will begin to understand the technology of Media Arts, while also learning to appreciate it as an expressive medium.

Discover Dance
This summer, Institute students will be introduced to the Middlesex County Magnet School Pre-Professional Training Model.
This program is designed to give dance students the opportunity to experience many different styles of dance while focusing on alignment technique. Students will study authentic movement, improvisation, ballet technique, modern technique, jazz technique, hip-hop/street forms and choreography and the experience will culminate in an informal performance.

Introduction to 3D Modeling and Printing (Architecture)
In this course students learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling and 3D printing. Students create various designs using Autodesk Inventor software and learn how to create 3D print files.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about baking and pastry arts through hands-on activities.

Business Entrepreneurship (Global Logistics and Business Administration)
Students will learn the fundamentals of business through learning entrepreneurship.
Students will work to design/create a business and will present their business plan at the end of the course.

Carpentry Skills for Yard Games (Construction Maintenance and Design)
Students will plan and build selected yard games for the local YMCA. Choices include corn hole, the football toss, or mini-golf holes.
Students will learn to collaborate and make class/team decisions, problem solve and basic project management skills.

Digital Media Technology (Graphic Design and Multimedia Art and Design)
In this course, students will get an introductory look at Adobe Photoshop. The focus will be on foundational image editing skills that can be applied in any similar program. Students will have the opportunity to design several projects as well as capturing and editing portraits.
At the end of the course, students will have printouts and digital files they can add to their portfolio when they apply for Graphic Design or Multimedia Art and Design!

Exercise Science and Kinesiology
The program will explore the career opportunity in physical therapy, athletic training, strength & conditioning, fitness & wellness and more.
The program provide an introduction of incorporating real world clinical scenarios to explore the concepts of anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, injury/illness prevention, clinical evaluation & diagnosis, immediate & emergency care, treatment modalities, rehabilitation exercises, strength training & fitness conditioning, health care administration and ethics/professional responsibility.

The Finance & Banking Career exploration program will answer the following questions: What is finance? What are the different types of jobs in finance? How do I decide where I might fit?
Students will have fun learning and completing and presenting projects involving the stock market, accounting, economics and careers in finance.

Welding
Welcome to the Early Career Summer Institute, where we'll be introducing young minds to the basics of welding technology!
This summer program is designed for 7th and 8th graders who have an interest in exploring the world of welding and fabrication. Over the course of this program, we'll be covering various welding techniques and safety protocols, as well as exploring the diverse career paths that welding technology has to offer.
Students will be given hands-on experience using welding equipment and tools, allowing them to develop the foundational skills needed to pursue further education in welding technology. Our goal is to inspire and prepare young minds to become the next generation of welders and fabricators, as well as expose them to the many exciting career opportunities that come with a background in welding.
*Any student who is currently a member of Scouts of America will be eligible for a merit badge.
