At McKinnon, we’re building and sharing world class technology in education. We’re focused on the continuous improvement of teaching and learning. That means not just providing relevant & reliable technology, but also the confidence to use the technology. We call this the “Confidence Framework” where Access + Experience + Skills = Confidence.
Working in IT at McKinnon is an opportunity to do your best work. You will have the opportunity to effect the lives of many learners and teachers. In all faces of our work we must remember that every staff member & student deserves the opportunity for excellence. Our actions, effort, and attitude will play a significant role in contributing to this ideal.
A confident, connected and collaborative generation of students paints a bright picture of our future. It’s a picture of inclusion, empathy and innovation where anything is possible. This is the future I want to live in. Now, let's get to work.
Blake Seufert
Systems Manager
Being a part of the IT Team means we trust you to do your work and tasks. As you progress as a Student Tech there will be significant freedoms, opportunities to master skills and contribute to the schools goals. All of this is not possible without a basis of trust. Trust that you are here to learn, not abuse your access to any potential sensitive information & get your work completed to a world class standard without the need for check-ins, follow-up, or inspection. If you abuse this trust, act unethically, or undermine the IT team or school you will be immediately dismissed from program.
The health and safety of all members of McKinnon's community is our collective responsibility. This means, if you spot a hazard that could cause injury it is your responsibility to take control of reporting the hazard or if safe to do so addressing & fixing it immediately. Hazards range from electrical wires that may be exposed, boxes or cables that are tripping hazards in walkways, etc. If you've been asked to undertake a task you feel is unsafe you must speak to a member of the IT Team immediately and do not perform the task.
Student Technicians are only permitted to use step ladders, not full size ladders.
Student Technicians must complete a drill safety induction before using a drill.
Student Technicians must not ever work with mains electrical power, e.g. power points/boards, power supplies.
When working with electrical equipment, Student Technicians must ensure that all devices are switched off and unplugged from mains power.
Keys Handling Policy
While working on projects, audits or tasks Student technicians may be required to use keys, provided by the IT Team, to access locked rooms or areas. These rules must be followed by all Student Technicians, regardless of their position in the team.
Rules Include

Staying within school grounds while handling keys
An interest in technology
Continuously improving your knowledge
Willingness to take on responsibility, innovate, & challenge the status quo

The Alex Rosenberg award is considered once per year and is Student Tech Team's most prestigious award.
When fitting, it is awarded to a member of the team that demonstrates outstanding contributions our school and team through their work ethic, attitude, & achievement.
Students who have achieved the Rosenberg Award:
Shauri P. (2021)
Antonia D. (2023)
Alex K. (2024)
Mr Rosenberg was a Maths Teacher at McKinnon in the 60s and 70s, and in 1974 led the charge to buy what was at the time, the first computer ever to be used in a Victorian School. He was a leader in his field and widely recognised for his innovative teaching methods in the maths curriculum. He taught computer programming in the maths curriculum and the purchased computer, a WANG 2200, was used by neighbouring schools to avoid them having to take their program cards to the local universities.
His initiative, interest and determination helped put McKinnon on the map and it’s in his spirit of this innovation and commitment we name this award, the Alex Rosenberg Award.
