About the learning commons

The RJE Learning Commons is a combination of learning, research, and project space where teachers and students come to learn, discover, and explore their curiosity. In the learning commons, you can find new books to read widely and expand your horizons, challenge yourself with makerspace creation, research deeply, and learn using books and technology.

How do I contact the learning commons?

The best way to reach us is via email, contact Mrs. Allen at amallen@mckinneyisd.net or Mrs. Teel at dteel@mckinneyisd.net or call  469-302-6526.

When can I visit the learning commons?

The learning commons is open Monday-Friday from 7:30am – 3:10pm. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to visit anytime after signing in at the office.

The learning commons model operates on a flexible schedule which means — no more waiting until library day — students come to the learning commons whenever they want or need! Teachers schedule lessons on information literacy skills that connect with what is being taught in the classroom. Small groups, individuals, and classes can all visit the learning commons at the same time, anytime, for reading or research.

How many books can I check out?

Kindergarten students = one book to begin, two books after January.

1st= two books after memorizing your ID number, three books in January.

2nd-5th graders = four books

** All students who participate in the BEE Amazing Book Challenge can check out one additional book.

Parents = five items for two weeks

Teachers = unlimited items for one month

When there is a special assignment in class, students may check out extra items. Books can and should go home to read each night.

When are library books due?

The computer marks all items overdue that have been checked out for two weeks or longer. If you have an item that is overdue you will get a printed reminder slip. We do not charge fines for overdue items.

Please return books you are finished with promptly since others may be waiting to read them. Students are welcome to keep items longer than two weeks, but be sure to come to the library to renew items so they won’t be marked overdue.

What happens if an item from the library is lost or damaged?

Lost books must be paid for in order to clear student records and borrow another book. Once an item has been deemed missing (don’t forget to look under your bed and in your car first!) students will be asked to pay for lost and damaged items. We accept monetary payments (checks preferred) or you may buy a hardback replacement copy from a bookstore and bring it to the learning commons.

What do students learn in the learning commons?

Research shows that children learn best at the point-of-need. Our learning commons program is an extension of the classroom and information skills are taught within the context of the classroom curriculum. All students participate in research units planned cooperatively with teachers and the MRS to learn research and technology skills at the same time as they learn curriculum-related information.

How can parents get involved?

We are always looking for volunteers! If you are detail-oriented, patient, and flexible we would love your help. Please contact Mrs. Teel if you are interested in being a weekly or bi-weekly shelving volunteer or are able to provide coverage at the circulation desk to allow for library staff lunch breaks.

The learning commons also runs a  Book Fair each year in the fall and spring to get kids excited about reading and raise money for new books and technology purchases at RJE. Please contact Mrs. Teel if you would like to volunteer at the book fair. Your help is crucial to our success!
