Welcome to the MCDS Parent Tech Report for October 2018. These data were collected from MCDS parents via survey links (emailed directly and also linked via the Pipeline). Participation in the survey was voluntary; names were not required.

📰 Headlines

SCREEN TIME:

  • Within each grade, we see a variety of weekly screen-time allowances, though screen-time clearly increases with age.

HARDWARE:

  • The most common personal tech device among MCDS students is a tablet that runs apps on a wifi network.
  • Many MCDS students get their own phone in 7th or 8th grade.

SOFTWARE:

  • The most common applications of tech among MCDS students are: video-streaming, video-chat, web search, text/IM, and email.

ATTITUDES & RESOURCES:

  • Within our community, we have a wide variety of concerns and priorities when it comes to our children’s use of technology.
  • 35% of MCDS parents report that tech rules at home are “very clearly defined.”
  • 59% said they are “somewhat defined--good, but could be better.”
  • One third of parents say they had visited mcdstech.org/parents before this survey.
