Library Rules and Policies

Monmouth Beach School wants to assure that all students have quality materials

for pleasure and purposeful reading.

This year in the Library Media Center I will be trying a new project with our students . . . digital badges!

Students in grades 3-5 will be able to identify areas of interest, set goals and create their own projects to complete in order to receive their badges. I have created 4 centers: Makerspace, Research, Reading and Miscellaneous. They will keep track of their work, and journal their progress. I have created some parameters/requirements, but my hope is that they will take on their own learning on topics of interest! I am sure I will be tweaking this a we move along, but I am eager to dive in and give it a go!

Makerspace centers include robotics, video game design, learning to knit, sew, arduino…. Whatever they would like to learn!

Research centers include various aspects of research from citing sources, locating credible websites, library skills, short and longer research projects a topic of their choice.

Reading centers will include free choice reading, book clubs and so on.

The Miscellaneous centers included 3-D printing (I know, a maker thing… needed more activities here and it will be new for both of us!), Duolingo, and may include cyber stuff - footprint, safety, and so on as well as board games and puzzle work.

Classes will continue to work together on various maker projects under my direction and the younger students will also work on digital badges together with my help!

If materials are truly lost or damaged, students will be responsible to pay for the item(s) so that they can be replaced. Please see Mrs. Stafford for the purchase price if she hasn't reached out to you just yet!

Older students!

If you are interested in reading YA (Young Adult) fiction, you must have a permission slip (below) signed by your parent and returned to me!

Parents!

Please understand that YA materials contain mature subject matter, situations and language. We provide this genre in order to meet the needs of our proficient readers and to supply books that will meet their interest level. Before signing the YA permission slip, please discuss this genre with your student.
