A message from Mrs Clark
Dear Families,
Today our Year 6 pupils returned to school following their amazing London residential trip. We are so proud to be able to offer this to all our pupils. These opportunities would not be possible if it were not for our team of staff and volunteers. I would like to extend my thanks to Miss Francis, Mrs Townsend, Mrs Richmond and Mr and Mrs Delves who accompanied the children for their stay on the HMS Belfast.
Our first parent consultations of the year take place next week on Tuesday and Thursday, please make sure you have signed up for a slot on Arbor. If you are not able to make these dates, contact the office directly to book an alternate time.
Finally, as we come to the end of Term 1, our lost property hamper is filling up! It is situated in the lobby of the school hall, please have a look at drop off or pick up to reclaim any mislaid belongings.
Have a great weekend and a restful October half term when it arrives.
Warm wishes,
Mrs Clark

Maynards Green: Good Behaviour in Focus
This week Mrs Clark and Mrs Townsend were monitoring behaviour in our Learning walk around the school.
We visited classes, spoke to pupils and adults and analysed the Term 1 data on behaviour from Arbor.
Findings
Behaviour across the school was very good.
Behaviour at outdoor learning was excellent.
Pupils could talk about how adults recognise and reinforce good behaviour.
Pupils could talk about how poor behaviour is dealt with by adults.
Adults were deploying the school behaviour policy consistently.
📌 Pupils were not secure in explaining the 3 warnings system, and how it supports behaviour and learning.
We have relaunched and refreshed pupils on our behaviour processes in assemblies and in class.
This has included creating visuals to support learners to understand and follow the behaviour policy at Maynards Green.
We feel that this approach promotes responsibility and respect, whilst maintaining a therapeutic aspect focusing on understanding and addressing the emotional needs behind a child's behaviour to improve overall well-being and academic outcomes.
If you have any questions about our approach to behaviour at school, please speak to your child's class teacher.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to give feedback on our emergency closure earlier this term.
We had 43 respondents to the survey.
Introducing our new School Garden!
We are excited to announce our new initiative that will enhance our school and learning experience of our pupils: the launch of our School Garden!
Thanks to the help of some of our parents, staff, and a generous donation of materials from local suppliers, our once-overlooked garden next to our swimming pool will now be our School Garden.
The aim of this new initiative is about promoting well-being, natural curiosity and building a stronger school community. The children will have a chance to grow their own vegetables, fruits and plants and learn about the natural environment.
Alongside the garden, we are launching weekly School Gardening Groups for our pupils during the school day. These groups will give students dedicated time to step away from the classrooms and explore the natural environment.
To name a few, our School Garden can bring a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing, emotional and social development; promotes healthy eating habits and learn where our food comes from; teaches life skills such as patience, teamwork, problem solving, resilience and sense of shared responsibility. It will also contribute to environmental awareness and sense of connection to the natural world.
Every successful garden is built with community support.
We currently need a vast amount of compost to fill our new raised beds, spring bulbs and winter plug plants.
We will need more donations in the future in order to successfully run this initiative and we will continue to inform you throughout the year. If you think you could help in any way please get in touch with us! Email office@maynardsgreen.org
Best Wishes,

LOST PROPERTY
Please remember to check the lost property basket in front of the hall, it is looking very full!
PARKING
We've been informed that some Maynards Green parents are parking at the top of the St. Marys school drive. This is causing serious issues:
Blocked Visibility: Parked cars are blocking the line of sight, creating a dangerous situation for children and drivers.
Unauthorised Parking: Cars are being left in St. Marys designated visitor spaces and in areas that are clearly marked 'No Parking'.
Please help us maintain a good relationship with our neighbours and, most importantly, keep all children safe. Thank you for your cooperation.on.

Updated Safeguarding Policies
As part of our ongoing commitment to the safety and wellbeing of every child, the school has recently completed a review and update of a number of our key safeguarding policies.
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and we ask that all parents take the time to read these documents to understand the procedures and expectations we have in place.
The updated policies are now available to view under the 'Policies' section of the school website.

Anger Management in Children - NSPCC
Every year many thousands of children are referred to Childline for anger issues. Anger management in children is one of the top mental health concerns in childcare. Anger and the ability to control it are key skills of adulthood. Violent thoughts frequently bubble underneath human interactions. Anger is the quickest way for those thoughts to become reality. For this reason it is tightly regulated in our society. Children must learn to overcome anger so that they do not fall a foul of strict controls on violent conduct. However, this is difficult for children to learn to manage since anger is remarkably powerful. Yet as parents and teachers there is no choice but to teach them to reign these emotions in. This can be hard knowledge to impart, but the NSPCC has produced helpful resources to aid you in that vital mission. If interested, please follow the link.
Parent & Carer Workshops
We are offering a programme of free workshops for parents and carers of primary aged children, including:
Taming the Worries (helping children manage anxiety and worry)
Tricky Mornings (supporting smoother starts to the day)
Neurodiversity, Anxiety, and Sleep (understanding the links and strategies to help)
We also host Lunch & Chat online groups for parents of primary and secondary aged children, providing parents with a relaxed space to share ideas and support one another.
These sessions not only equip families with practical strategies, but also reinforce the work schools are doing every day to help children flourish.
Parents and carers can book via TicketTailor

Anti-Bullying Week 2025 is a special week from Monday, November 10th to Friday, November 14th!
This years theme is "Power for Good." This means everyone has the power to be kind and helpful. If you see someone being mean, use your power to speak up or tell a grown-up so you can help a friend.
It all starts on Monday, November 10th, with Odd Socks Day! Wear your silliest, mismatching socks to celebrate that it's great to be different and to be YOU!
Let's all work together to be kind, everywhere!
What an exciting few weeks we have had in Doormice class! We have been learning all about how special we are to our families and that families all look different. We really loved getting messages from you to read out at hometime so thank you for sending those in.
We have created our own maps of our route to school and looked at the words more and less in relation to weight. It has been great fun to learn our new phonics sounds too and getting to experience learning on the big bottom field. We found LOTS of insects. We are really proud of how well the children have settled in and look forward to doing lots more fun learning!
Mrs Osborn
Reception Class teacher
It seems hard to believe that the children are now reaching the end of their first term on Year 1! The last couple of weeks have seen us adapt to the expectations of Year 1. We have been learning some new phonemes in phonics and even some new symbols in maths. All of the children have worked really hard to give all the challenges in class a go and we are all very proud of them.
This term we also had the delivery of the Year 1 mud kitchen. The children have really enjoyed being able to make potions and recipies with the natural resources in the garden. We need to say a very big THANK YOU to Julie, our chair of governors, and the men at Mens Shed of Age Concern Heathfield & DIstrict for donating the amazing mud kitchen.
Mrs Green and Mrs Keet
Year One Class Teachers
Year 2
As we come to the end of another week, we would like to thank the children and parents for all of their efforts during our school closure. It was an absolute delight to see all of the children's work posted on Tapestry and brought into school to share with the class. You all worked so hard!
This week, with school resuming, the children have got right back into their learning. We have started a new unit of work in English using the book 'The Cafe at the Edge of the Woods' as inspiration. The class made their own monsters who could visit the cafe and learnt about adjectives and used them in their writing.
We have also been lucky enough to have a visit from Rachel at High Weald Heroes who took us on a welly walk to Sapperton Woods as part of our geography topic 'Into the Woods'.
What a busy week we have had!
Mrs Evans and Mrs Keet
Year Two Class Teachers
Another action-packed few weeks for Year 3! We welcomed Rachel from High Weald Heroes for a Roman workshop. We discovered lots about why the Romans came to Britain, and more specifically to our local area. She showed us some artefacts and we had fun deciding what they were. Next, we made a bloomery from clay, a technology that was vital for the production of iron.
We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Julia who gave us a Cuckoo Trail workshop. We learnt lots about the birds who live on the trail and then created collages of them.

Year 3 Class Teacher
Year 4
In year 4, we continued learning about rivers. We welcomed Rachel from the High Weald Heroes. Together, we went to Sapperton Woods and explored the leaky dams built there to prevent flooding in our local area. We used natural materials to try and aid this work by adding some small leaky dams to the gill stream. We observed the water speed decrease and increase, depending on the effectiveness of our work.
We also applied our classroom learning to building models of the rivers with natural materials, naming parts such as river source, river mouth, meander, tributary etc.
In the classroom, we looked at the maps of the local area and found out that many of the local places are called after springs, gills and streams. We also looked at some of the historical uses of the streams and acted out how watermills worked in Tudor times.
A big thank you to our Parent Volunteers who made this walk possible!

Year 4 Class Teacher
Year 5 have continued to have a very busy and varied term 1. In September, we were fortunate enough to take part in the NSPCC's Speak Out. Stay Safe. programme, which aims to help children understand abuse in all its forms. The children took part in a virtual assembly which was followed up by a workshop given by a member of the NSPCC.
I was really impressed with how the children responded to both the assembly and the workshop and was pleased to see the children ask mature and interesting questions.
Sporting News:
On Wednesday 1st October, children from Years 5 and 6 took part in the Heathfield Area Netball Tournament. They gave a wonderful performance and showed great resilience and determination. The goal shooting was particularly impressive. Well done!
The second sporting fixture this term was the Heathfield Area Cross Country Tournament. This event took place on the 15th October at Burwash Primary School. The standard of running was excellent this Year, with six Maynards Green pupils making it to the next round. Good luck to you all!

Our Year 6 Kip in a Ship Residential was AMAZING!
The trip started on Tuesday. We got the train from Uckfield to London Bridge - some of us had not been on a train before, so even that was a new experience! After that, we walked (with our enormous bags) to the HMS Belfast. Once we arrived, we left our luggage and went to have a workshop on The Golden Hinde. That evening, we ate dinner out of mess tins on the HMS Belfast and got to sleep in our bunks after an evening activity in the ship's classroom.
Wednesday was very busy! We had breakfast on the ship at 8am and then we had a looooong walk to Shrek's Adventure, which was so much fun. After we had completed that, we went on the London Eye and spotted some of the landmarks of London. Before we headed to the theatre, we had lunch and a play in the playpark. Whilst we were walking to the theatre, we spotted David Walliams (and Stephen Merchant, but only the grown ups knew who he was...) and he gave us high fives. Lottie even asked him about his rivalry with Simon Cowell on Britain's Got Talent! The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre was mesmerising and dinner at Franco Manca was delcious. Notably, Oliver managed to polish off an entire pizza! Our chilled movie night was much needed after all of that walking.
On Thursday, after breakfast on the ship, we went to the Tower of London. We had a workshop on Crime and Punishment (one of our Year 5 topics) and got to see the Crown Jewels!
As a class, we impressed our teachers with how we showed our school values and grew in maturity over the 3 days as well as forming closer bonds with one another.
Miss Francis
Year Six Class Teacher
The Nature Champions had an Autumn session with Kim Twinn this term. They explored the school grounds identifying living organisms and collected those that interested them to take back to the Cuckoo Lodge for closer inspection.
They observed fungi growing and as always were reminded to observe but not touch these organisms.
Back at the lodge they discussed seed dispersal and sorted the items collected into their relevant groups depending on the method used by plants to spread their seeds.
They thoroughly enjoyed using the microscope to look at the close up details of their finds!
They also observed a collection of autumnal leaves and recreated their observations on a colourful display of leaves of their own.
It's always lovely to hear how the children are inspired to develop their science at home. Please feel free to email me.
Many thanks,

On Saturday 27th September 2025 I took a team of Year 5 and 6 children to compete in the annual netball tournament. This tournament was set up in Jemima's memory to raise much needed funds for two charities who have supported her family. The team started the tournament at 9.00am on a bright sunny day and played eight matches against some fierce competition. Our school were the only school to take part against netball clubs from the local area. Our team showed, grit, determination and resilience throughout the morning and played some amazing netball. I am incredibly proud of their sportsmanship and strength of character to get through some hard matches. Thank you to the children who volunteered to play and parents who came and supported our team!
