Maynards Green CP School
Dear Families,
As we come to the end of this term we say farewell to Mrs Mamoany who has been teaching our Y1 class since earlier in the year. Mrs Mamoany has become a loved member of our Maynards Green team, amongst parents, pupils and staff alike. Wendy, thank you for your hard work and commitment during your time with us, we hope you will come back to visit!
After October Half Term Mrs Osborn returns from maternity leave to teach in Y1 alongside Miss Phillips. Mrs Osborn will teach the class on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with Miss Phillips teaching on Thursday and Friday.
Teaching Assistants
Our dedicated team of Teaching Assistants play a key role in the education and support of our pupils at MG. Despite this, nationally tightening budgetary demands are resulting in changes to how TAs are deployed, and the number of TAs schools are able to employ. A recent headline in Schools Week shared the statistic that 75% of Primary schools in England have made staffing cuts to TAs in 2024. Thankfully, we are not yet at this point at MG, however, this means you will see TA support in classes lessened as your child moves up the school. We are currently recruiting for a full time TA position. This role will reinstate the essential nurture intervention and support previously led by Mrs Procter. School Development Plan 2024-25
We are excited to share with you the priorities for development this year:
KEY PRIORITIES FOR 2024-25
1. To further enhance the consistency of KS1 learner experience
2. To continue to cultivate excellent pupil behaviour and pupil leadership outside the classroom
3. To improve effectiveness of the TA team through cycle of appraisal, supported by a tailored CPD programme
4. To design and implement a scheme of Outdoor Learning
These priorities form part of the wider 5-year strategy for the development of Maynards Green School, working with staff, governors, and families to realise this ambitious plan. The scheme of outdoor learning we will introduce in 24-25 will be part of the larger piece of work to establish an onsite Forest School provision by the academic year 26-27. I hope you will agree that these are very exciting plans that will further enhance our offer at Maynards Green.

Every year in terms 5 or 6 the children in Years 5 and 6 complete a My Health My School survey. Across the county the data that has come through is that children felt less secure and happy with the knowledge around these areas...
First Aid (46%), Managing Money (50%), Gangs (45%), Knife Awareness (54%), How to cope with a Death (34%), How to cope with a separation (38%) and How to cope with feeling lonely (49%)
As a school, we are already developing ways that we can build on the children's knowledge in these areas. At home do you or could you provide opportunities to have open conversations and answer your child's questions?

📢NEWS FROM OUR GOVERNORS📢
Change of governor status
One of our governors, Mr Ben Jones, will change status from a Co-opted Governor to a Parent Governor this academic year.
If there are any objections, or questions about this change in status please contact Carol Powell our Clerk to the Governors at cpowell@maynardsgreen.org
Mr John Anderson
Chair of Governors
WELCOME FROM OUR CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
Hi, I am John, Chair of the school Governing Board, I wanted to introduce myself and, firstly, explain to you all what we do.
First and foremost, we are entirely focused upon ensuring the success of the school, and therefore the delivery of an exceptional learning and growth experience for your children. We do so in four distinct ways;
Setting the school vision
Holding the headteacher accountable
Overseeing the schools' finances
Supporting the school
The Board comprises volunteers with a wide range of skills and experience who give their time freely to ensure that Maynards Green is the School of Choice for local families.
I joined the Board a little over two years ago and have recently been voted Chair. I have a wide range of commercial experience across many disciplines. Latterly. I have devoted my time to charitable causes, including running three children's/ youth/special needs charities. In addition to Maynards Green, I am a Director of Young at Heart, a Heathfield Based intergenerational project, of which Maynards Green is very much a part of.
I very much hope to meet you in the coming months and years, as your children progress through our wonderful school.
We have had an 'out of this world' week. We got to experience what it would be like to be in space in a Planetarium and looked at satellite pictures to see if we could spot the walruses. We also enjoyed spending time down the bottom field learning about the changes in seasons and even spotting some worms!
We also started our wood work journey. We discussed how we could be safe with the tools and practised where to put our hands whilst hammering golf tees into cardboard boxes.
Mrs Green
The children have really focused on their learning in Maths. We started with counting forwards and then had great fun learning to count back from 10. The children used the Numicon to support them in what number would be next. We even had a go at counting back from 20.
They were also very excited to have a turn on the laptops. In small groups, they had the opportunity to create pictures on Paint. This gave them the opportunity to learn how to use the mouse pad.
Miss Phillips
Year One Class Teacher
Year 2 have settled back into school life. We have begun to learn about the Great Fire of London as well as about the modern city of London in Geography. The children have made models of London landmarks - can you guess which one this is? We have really enjoyed our rugby taster sessions as well. In Maths we have looked at place value and are learning some of the laws and vocabulary for addition, such as commutative law and addends! In English we have been busy re-writing stories by Oliver Jeffers, as well as inventing our own. The visit of the planetarium was amazing - we flew to Jupiter and back.
Mrs Boorer
Year Two Class Teacher
Year 3
Year 3 were lucky enough to welcome Rachel from High Weald Heroes. We learnt all about the Romans in Britain, and most specifically in the High Weald. The children examined a box of artefacts and decided what they might be used for; there were lots of interesting ideas!
Then, the children learnt how the Romans made iron from iron ore locally and acted out the scene. Lastly, we made a bloomery or milestone out of clay. We all had a lot of fun!!
Miss Taylor
Year Three Class Teacher
Year 4
Year 4 have been busy learning all about rivers - we have learned how rivers are formed and why people choose to live by the rivers. We also discovered the reasons why rivers might flood. Rachel from the High Weald Heroes took us on a Welly Walk to Sapperton Woods to do some Geography Fieldwork. We had a chance to discover how the local area is protected by leaky dams. We even crossed the stream to have a closer look!
We also welcomed the Young at Heart residents last week for their first visit with us. We had a chance to complete some Lego challenges whilst getting to know each other. We also read to the residents - they said our reading was fantastic! We look forward to all the future visits with us :)
Mrs Holton
Year Four Class Teacher
I am very pleased to be back at school after my absence following my time as a member of the Jury Service. It is good to see that the children have settled in well and are becoming use to the changes and challenges that come with being in Upper Key Stage 2.
The class have embraced our topic on the Ancient Greeks and are full of interesting and engaging questions. In addition, the children have been learning about place value in Maths and are using the book 'The Watertower' as a stimuli for their writing. In Art, the class have been developing their sketching techniques by using a range of sketching pencils to sketch and shade with. They produced some wonderful work.
In PE, over the last couple of weeks, Maynards Green have been fortunate enough to have had Trevor Young, from the Heathfield Rugby Coaching Project, take Years 2 to 6 for two Rugby training sessions. All Year groups had a great time and came away with a number of Rugby skills and an interest in joining the Heathfield & Waldron RFC.
Year 6 have made a good start to their learning across the curriculum.
As well as working hard with our English and maths, we have already had a special visitor. David Law is the Community Safety Officer for the Safer East Sussex Team. This multi-agency team is based at Hammonds Drive Police station in Eastbourne and is part of East Sussex County Council. To subscribe to the team’s seasonal newsletter please follow this link: East Sussex County Council (govdelivery.com).
David is a former Sussex Police Officer with a qualification in teaching PSHE. He is also a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. As part of his role David runs the Cyber-Responsibility Workshop. This workshop gives young students the chance to discuss Online Safety issues that can make an impact early in the development of young people. Building resilience to these issues is vital and promotes a safer community for everybody.
David speaks to the students at their level using real life examples but is careful to let the young students have a safe space to understand the risks and develop the knowledge and skills to be able to question and challenge what they hear and see when necessary.
In September this year, David visited the school to discuss with Year 6 the important issue of safety and responsibility when using social media. He covered cyber-crime and the common problems associated with the use of the internet including how to keep ourselves safe from criminals. David said, "The students engaged well and made some very thought-provoking comments."
David always stresses to the students that based on his experience the most important factor of staying safe is to share any problems or concerns with a trusted adult as early as possible. It is so important for parents and carers to keep that line of communication open. This can be very challenging during the teenage years. David recommends parents/carers visit the CEOP website where there is an abundance of resources on how to keep responsible and safe on the internet. Sitting down and watching some of these videos with the young person can stimulate very helpful joint discussion.
The Get Safe Online website gives wider information on keeping the internet a safe place for everybody. It’s a great source of information.

David has also uploaded a walkthrough video to YouTube to explain to parents the content of the informative discussion he has had with the students. It can be accessed via this link below:

Year Six Class Teacher
What an amazing week of space learning at Maynards Green! In celebration of World Space Week and the theme of Space and Climate Change the children have taken part in a range of activities across the school, including identifying Walrus from Space satellite images.
A HUGE to The Friends of Maynards for funding the visit from The Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux. All the children on the Wednesday got to enjoy a session in the inflatable planetarium and learn from the experts all about space!
They took part in a session inside the planetarium where they are able to view amazing projections of space and explore our solar system.
These are just some of the inspiring images!
As well as the inflatable planetarium visit the Nature Champions also had the opportunity to work with Dr Kim Twinn, our fabulous STEM Ambassador. They watched a NASA video introducing the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 and why scientists are interested in recording the release/uptake carbon dioxide on Earth using a space-based instrument. They then navigated their way around the International Space Station to see where the instrument was located and they used What3Words (TN21 0DD) to map the locations of the 3 trees we focused our observations situated on our school grounds.
I hope that your child has been inspired by some of the activities that have happened during the week.
If they have continued their learning at home I'd love hear about it!
