Maynards Green CP School
Dear Families,
Welcome back to Maynards Green for the Autumn Term! The children have all made a great start to the new year and are already settled into their daily routines. Thank you to all families who attended our meet the teacher meetings. The accompanying slides are available below if you were not able to make the meeting on the day.
I am also quickly settling into my new role, and the team and I have started work immediately on the key priorities for 24-25. We have achieved much in the first fortnight including:
Whole staff Safeguarding training
Learning Walks across KS1 and 2
First full governing board meeting of the new academic year
FRIENDS of MG meeting
As you may be aware during the Summer holidays the government made changes to national legislation around pupil absence from school. Please read the letter attached which gives full details of this. It is important to know as a school we do not benefit financially from fines, these payments are issued from, and paid directly to the Local Authority.
Maintenance of the roof in the library area of the school continues this term and we are hopeful this will be completed by October half term break.
Finally, on Monday 16th Sept from 9 - 10am I will be available in the Hall for an informal drop-in "Meet the Headteacher" session. Please come along to share a cup of coffee and have a chat!
Have a fantastic weekend when it arrives.
Warm wishes,
Mrs Clark
Headteacher

As always, we have returned to school and used our first INSET day to update the whole team's safeguarding knowledge. One of these areas is reading the updated version of the statutory safeguarding and child protection guidance for schools in England, Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE).1
The guidance sets out what schools and colleges in England must do to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people under the age of 18.
Updates for KCSIE 2024 include:
-amending the definition of ‘safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children’ in line with Working together to safeguard children 20232
-additional information around when children may require early help, in accordance with the guidance in Working together
-a recommendation for school staff, governors and trustees to use the DfE Data Protection guidance for schools to understand data protection
-clarification that schools continue to be responsible for the safeguarding of pupils they place with an alternative provision provider.
If you would like to read this guidance, please click on the following link.

We have had a brilliant first couple of days in Dormice class! The children have been learning about the school, making lots of new friends and exploring the inside and outside classroom. We have been painting, building, mud cooking and sand castle building! I am sure that there will be a lot of tired childen this weekend.
Miss Evison, Mrs McFall and I are very proud of how the children have settled in. Well done Dormice class - you have been amazing in your first few days at school!
Mrs Green
This week, we have really focused on our Phonics. The children are working really hard on writing a sentence from memory.
We have also started our RE topic where we are learning what it means to belong somewhere. We have talked about who we live with and how as a class we are also similar to being a family. The children then created some amazing self-portraits.
We are still looking for some parent helpers to support with our swimming lesson on a Tuesday morning from 9-10:30. Please speak to Mrs Mamoany or myself if you feel you would be able to help.

This week we have been learning about London and starting our topic of The Great Fire of London. We have been reading the book 'Lost and Found' and will be re-writing it in our own words.
The children have been getting used to being in year 2 and the new responsibilities this brings. We will be reading more books by Oliver Jeffers this term and writing our own stories. We will be adding and subtracting in Maths and investigating the cause of the Great Fire of London.
Mrs Boorer
Year Two Class Teacher
This week, we have begun learning about the Romans in Britain. We enjoyed trying to put famous events in British history on a timeline. It was harder than it looked!
In English, we have started our first text "Cotton Wool Colin". After reading the book, we have planned our own version using a the book for inspiration.
A reminder that PE is on a Wednesday and swimming on a Monday in Terms 1, 5 and 6. I know that many children are keen to start on the homework and the menus can be found on the school website under 'Curriculum' and then 'Year Group Overviews - Rabbit Class'. On there, you will also find the overview for all subjects this year, knowledge organisers for each term and, at the very bottom of the page, the homework menus for the whole year.
I look forward to an exciting year ahead and thank you in advance for your continued support.

Year 3
Year 4
Year 4s have been busy settling in to the new year group over the last two weeks.
We began reading 'The Egyptian Cinderella' by Shirley Climo and discussed the similarities and differences between this story and the Western version we are more familiar with.
We did some drama to inspire our writing of setting descriptions. We used the technique called 'Define a Space' to show through our actions and facial expressions to explore how we could show the audience the change of a setting without using words.

A fantastic start to the new term! The children have settled back into school life and are taking on their new class responsibilities. Next week I will be on Jury Service so Year 5 will have Mrs Middleton as their teacher for the next couple of weeks.

Since starting in Year 6, we have been getting to know the expectations and routines in our new classroom. We have written our class expectations and everybody signed them (including Miss Francis and Mrs A) to show that we are going to try our hardest to meet them.
In English, we have started our topic about Dragons based on How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. We looked at the features of a spine poem and started to collect ideas to write our own.
In maths, we have been exploring number and place value. We have been practising our multiplication and division fact families so that these can become secure.
Our big question in history is "Were the Vikings vicious or victorious?" and we have come up with little questions that we would like to answer by the end of the topic.
All in all, it has been a positive start to the year!
Miss Francis
Year Six Class Teacher
We have certainly started our year off in Science with lots of interesting discussions and an array of learning activities!
Year 1
We have begun this term talking about seasonal changes. You may have noticed your child coming home singing a song we have been learning which you can access here if you wanted even more reminders! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksGiLaIx39c
Year 2
As part of the living things and their habitats topic we have explored microhabitats on our school grounds. The children throughly enjoyed overturning logs, looking on tree trunks and observing the wildflowers in the raised bed area. We observed and recorded a wide selection of living organisms all living on or visiting our grounds.
Year 3
We are learning about Scientific Enquiry and we are designing how we could improve this basic model of a solar oven to make it more effective. The children have been learning about how scientists pose questions and make plausible predictions. Later in the term we will be recording the results from the new improved designs.
Year 4
During our learning about how living organisms are classified based on their habitats we explored our own school habitat. The children identifed and recorded the names of the many trees on our grounds and began researching their similarities and their differences.
Year 5
We have been learning about the forces of gravity and the effects of air resistance by conducting our own comparative tests. This included designing and making parachutes to carry out fair tests where the children changed one aspect of the parachute design to see if it impacted how quickly it reached the ground.
Year 6
We are learning about how scientists classify living organisms. The children have been researching the the similarities and differences between the 6 Kingdoms of Life. Communicating their understanding in informative posters incorporating the helpful acronym MRS GREN which helps to identify how an organism is living.
If you have any questions about the science your child is learning or you wanted to share with me if your child continued their learning at home then please do email me.
