Can we have a school pet?
We did!💪
We have no plans for a school pet at this time.
However, as many of you are keen to get up close with some living creatures, Mrs. Clark has arranged for a visit from Company of Critters on Thursday 22nd May!
Each class will have a visit from a selection of critters, have the opportunity to handle the animals and hear a short talk from the Company of Critters team.
Please visit the website for more information: Company of Critters
Huge thanks to FRIENDS of MG who have fully funded this extra curricular experience for all our pupils!
👍Thank you for supporting our school!👍
Dear Families,
Term 4 is our second formal assessment point of the year, and this week Mrs Townsend and I have met with each of our Teachers for Pupil Progress meetings. In these sessions we look at the progress and attainment of each child in the school, whether they are on track and what next steps need to be put in place.
Maths is a strength across the school, with every cohort on track to meet targets. In Reading we have seen an increase in the number of pupils working at Greater Depth across KS2. Despite this success, Reading remains a key focus of all year groups. Please support reading at home by reading to/with your younger children daily, encouraging your older children to read for 20minutes a day, and logging reading on Boom Reader!
Writing is progressing well with our EYFS pupils making incredible progress in fine motor skills and phonic knowledge! Here is a quote from one of our governors on the Governor Visit day last Friday 14th March -"The children were absolutely delightful. I am also extremely envious of their phonics progress, I can only wish my daughter would pick it up this fast!"
Friday 4th April is our last day of term, with open classrooms from 1pm. Please do take this opportunity to visit your child's class and have a look at their learning, and share an informal chat with the teaching team. We look forward to seeing you there!
🐰Enjoy the Easter Break 🐣
Warm wishes,
Mrs Clark

Reminders
Parking
We want to take a moment to kindly remind everyone about the importance of sensible and considerate car parking on the streets around Maynards Green School. With increased traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times, it's crucial that we all work together to ensure the safety and accessibility of our community.
Lost Property
We have lots of lost property that does not have a label. Please label all items of clothing with your child's name so we can return them to their owners.
Important reminders to ensure the safety and upkeep of our school grounds for everyone.
Firstly, we kindly request that children do not go on to the grass area and climb the trees.
Secondly, for the safety and security of our staff and their vehicles, children are not allowed to access the staff car park. We understand that drop-off and pick-up times can be busy, but entering the car park poses a risk of accidents and potential damage to vehicles. Please ensure your children remain in designated pedestrian areas.
Finally, we have noticed some children climbing on the bins. Please emphasise to your children that climbing on the bins is unsafe. Bins can be unstable and pose a significant risk of injury if they were to tip over or if a child were to fall.

Lily Stevanovic - Parent and Carer Practitioner from Me and My Mind
Lily from ‘Me and My Mind’ team (part of Mental Health Support Teams), would like to set up sessions to help parents & carers with supporting their child/young person’s mental and emotional wellbeing. She offers workshops, themed coffee mornings, drop-in sessions, online and recorded webinars and short courses on specific subjects but would first like to know what would be most valuable for you and your young person right now. Sessions could include things like “Supporting your child with Anxiety and Worry” or getting advice and support on Sleep, Food; Mood, Tricky Mornings, Exam Anxiety and many more.
Please click: https://forms.office.com/e/QYXhLwZ2NG or scan QR code to complete a quick 1-minute survey to find out what kind of things are on offer and to say which ones you would be interested in attending. For further information or to find out more please come and speak to me.

Swimming Timetable for Term 5 starting week beginning Monday 28th April
Mondays:
Years 2, 3 4, 5, and 6
Tuesdays:
Year 1 & R
We will be holding a sponsored swim on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th April!
This week we have been enjoying the sunshine and learning about the changes that happen when spring arrives! We were very lucky to have a visit to Sanctuary Farm and got to witness the joys of spring by holding some lambs. Some of the lambs we met have been born two hours before we got there!
We were then supporting the farmers by feeding some of the animals and were lucky enough to get to sit on a tractor.
Thank you to all the parents that supported on the trip by being helpers or arranging lifts to the farm.

Reception Class teacher
In Year 1, we enjoyed being part of the national Bupa coding day. The class had the chance to discuss how to stay healthy with what we eat and drink and the exercise we do. We then met Al the robot who needed our help to create algorithms to follow. We had a go at making some for the Beebots to follow and even designed our own sequence to follow. The children were really focused and enjoyed taking part in all the different challenges.
Make sure you check out Tapestry for more pictures of the children completing the algorithms.

Year 2
We have had another busy few weeks in Hedgehog Class. The highlight was our trip to Little Sing to perform with the other Year 2 classes. We had an amazing time. Back at school, we are exploring measures in Maths and working on producing some information writing about aliens - we will be making our own alien pet shop for the end of term. We have been learning about Ernest Shackleton and his Antarctic explorations - he lived in Eastbourne so is a local hero! We really enjoyed our healthy eating workshop.
Mrs Boorer
Year Two Class Teacher
Year 3
As part of our Anglo-Saxon topic, we have been exploring everyday life. We learnt about the daily chores that had to be done: chopping firewood, hunting, dyeing wool for clothing, making food and many more besides. To get a taste of how much work was involved, we all had a go at weaving. We wondered how long it would take to weave enough for a piece of clothing! In English, we wrote instructions to help anyone who fancied having a go.
How to weave!
Year 4
In Year 4 we began our Stone Age to Iron Age topic. So far, we looked at the 3 Stone Age periods and began to think about changes that happened between the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods.
We were visited by Rachel from High Weald Heroes who delivered a Stone Age workshop. She brought lots of Stone Age artefacts for us to see and make inferences about. After that, we pretended to be museum curators and labeled the objects to display in an exhibition. During the workshop we also had a chance to draw with charcoal, grind flour from seeds and dress up as a Stone Age person!
After half term we are going to go on a Stone Age themed workshop around our local area.
Sporting News:
Children from Years 5 & 6 took part in a Touch Rugby Tournament, organised by HWRFC. The tournament consisted of two leagues, A & B, with the top two winning teams from each league, playing in the playoffs. Maynards Green performed extremely well and ended up in both semi-finals. The A team got through to the final round and became the over all winners of the tournament. Well done to all our players.
In PSHE, Year 5 have been learning all about 'Emergency Aid'. One of the activities they were task with, was to practise how to put someone in the recovery position.
Big Dance Festival
Well done to all the children in Year 5 for giving a wonderful performance at the Big Dance Festival which took place on 12th March at HCC. The children had a fabulous time and enjoyed the whole experience. They had worked so hard to learn the choregraphed routine over the last couple of months and managed to pull off a sensational performance on the night. Great work Year 5!
Miss Lacey
Year Five Class Teacher
PE Lead
Year 6 have been working hard this term on preparing for SATs next term. We have swapped our Friday maths investigations for Friday arithmetic papers and have been astounded by our scores creeping up and up!
In our PE learning, we have been doing gymnastics and rugby. During our PE lessons, we have been practising different jumps (pike, straddle and tuck) that we have been taught and we got to perform these on apparatus. We also learned and practised a variety of rolls (forward rolls, backward rolls, straddle rolls, barrel rolls and dish rolls). Once we became confident, and we knew we could land safely, we began to incorporate different directions with our jumps.

THANK YOU!!!
I am delighted to report that the Book Fair was a resounding success and raised £547.87 for the school to spend on Scholastic books! Thank you to everyone who bought a book; whilst they can often be bought cheaper on Amazon, your generosity by buying books through the fair, has given the school the chance to buy some much needed new books. I will share some of the new titles with you in the coming months.
We have raised an incredible £405 through the sale of red noses in the run up to the big day. Thank you School Council for giving up your time to sell these after school and to all of you for your generosity.
The children in all year groups took part in the balloon keepy uppy challenge and had lots of fun trying to keep their balloons off the ground throughout their allocated time!
School Council and Mrs Holton
This term our Nature Champions worked with Kim Twinn on the British Science Week theme of Change and Adapt.
They played the Woolly Worm Camouflage Game where they discussed the importance of how living things adapt to suit their surroundings for various reasons including to evade any predators that might be lurking.
They then collected materials from around the school grounds to build a wormey. A plastic bottle was filled with repeating layers of sand, soil and leaves. Once the level of the layers was near the top, the worms were added to the wormery and the capless top of the bottle was inverted to close it up and provide a watering point.
Over time, we have seen that the worms turn the leaves and waste material into soil and the layers are well mixed. We talked about how important worms are for keeping soil healthy, and how that is good for growing healthy plants.
The worms will return to their natural habitat to once again enjoy all that our school grounds have to offer!
The Nature Champions also compared plants and looked at how plants have adapted to live in different environments. The cacti and succulents were a great examples of leaves and stems that have adapted to survive drought conditions. We talked about Rose's aspidistra which has dark green leaves to absorb as much sunlight as possible when it grows in the wild on forest floors.
Should you want to try out any British Science Week activities you can find information on their website, click HERE to go to the activity packs page.
It's been lovely to receive emails from you about the science happening at home, please feel free to keep sending them!
Many thanks,
Mrs A
