As the first week of the 2021-2022 school year comes to a close, students wonder how the rest of the year will go for them. Students have been learning in a very “unconventional” manner for the last two years due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Walking back into a building filled to the brim with students and teachers was shocking. Most students hadn’t seen teachers or peers in person for more than a year.
However, this semester, students were forced to go to school in person like every other year. Masks are still mandatory, and even though the school environment has been somewhat similar to other years, students still keep in mind the threat of an ongoing pandemic.

When asked about their experience returning to school, one student at MAST@FIU said: “Coming back to school after a whole year away has me feeling very weird. I had to get reacquainted with people I had already met. I got to see people I haven’t seen for the entire pandemic. To be honest, it was very refreshing to be back. It was awkward to see my old teachers I had technically never met in person from the previous year. I also found it funny how no one could recognize me with a mask on. All in all, I am very happy to be back, and I am ready for the new year.”
Not only do most students need to relearn how to be in a physical school, but students at MAST@FIU have a whole new environment to learn. Our new building was fabricated during the pandemic and finished this summer, just in time for the 2021-2022 school year.
On the first day, students gathered in the halls and anxiously awaited their new classes. Students had a lot to say about the new school. One student commented: “When I first found out about the new school, I was scared. I was scared that I wouldn’t like it or that it would disappoint me. But upon reaching the school, my first thought was how pretty it was. From the outside it looked very modern, with the huge window on the side, it looked very pretty. I ended up not being disappointed as the inside was just as pretty as the outside.”
Most students had an uplifting moment at school as it was better than what they envision. Students had a great time the first week and can’t wait to come back.
