About the Graphic and media Design Internship
GMD-400 Graphic and Media Design Internship is designed to provide a field design experience in the Washington metropolitan area. Appropriate internship sites include graphic and media design firms, architectural firms, governmental design agencies, and businesses specializing in residential and commercial design. Your internship will be monitored by Professor Bridget Murphy.
This internship experience is designed to:
- integrate academic learning with experiential learning.
- enable students to explore their career goals.
- enable students to evaluate their preparation for a particular career.
GMD-400 SL Graphic and Media Design Service Learning Internship is designed to provide field experience or an internship in a non-profit organization, community-based service agency, or for a community-based research, scholarship, and creative activity, in the Washington metropolitan area. The Service Learning Designation (SL) will require a minimum of 20 hours of service.

When can I take my Internship?
Answer:
- Beginning in the Fall 2019 semester, the prerequisite requirements for internship are senior status and permission of the dean of School of Design, Arts, and Humanities.
Do I have to find my internship?
Answer:
Yes. Ultimately it is up to each student to search for and receive an internship offer.
Marymount and the Graphic and Media Design department offer many resources to help you find an internship including:

Marynet won't let me add GMD-400 or GMD 400 SL to my schedule. How do I register my internship?
Answer:
You cannot register yourself for GMD-400 through Marynet.
Okay, so how do I register my internship?
Answer:
To register, you need to have an internship offer. Once you have an offer, you can report your internship to Center for Career Services through Handshake. After Center for Career Services verifies your internship, they will register you for GMD 400 or GMD 400 SL. This process can take up to 5 business days to complete.
When is the last day I can register for internship?
Answer:
The last day for internship is the last day of drop/add.

How long is the Graphic and Media Design internship?
Answer:
Most GMD internships are 3 credits and last for 240 hours. Some students (in rare instances) complete a second 3 credit internship which lasts for 240 hours.
Is the internship paid?
Answer:
Many internships are paid. Some are not. Ultimately, it will depend on the type of job you are looking for and where you receive internship offers. In general, internships at small residential graphic and media design firms are not paid.
