Spainhower Speaks!

Welcome to our Spainhower website! We welcome you to our newsletter page where you can see our school news each week. We introduce Mikayla Blackenter (11th grade) and Betty Wyatt (11th grade).

Hey, my name is Betty Wyatt. I am 17 years old. My dream job is to become a nurse. After I graduate I want to move to Minnesota and start my big career.

Hello, my name is Mikayla Blackenter. I'm 16 years old and a junior in high school. I've been involved in the school newsletter since sophomore year. I am also the junior editor of our newsletter. I decided to be a Registered Nurse (RN), meaning that once I graduate, I will be headed to nursing school. I'm an honest and caring person. I love helping people, from talking to them to helping them physically. I do have passion for my future and I'm excited and nervous to see how it goes.

Back to School

Sam Schneiders

Welcome back to another wonderful school year. We have a lot of new staff and new changes throughout the building. This year is going to be a lot of switching routines and getting used to the new changes. Some ways to help you get through a positive school year is to stay focused and keep a steady, motivated mindset. Throughout the school year, you will have some hard times that will seem impossible to overcome. However, if you remember your goals and ask for support you can overcome this challenge. The main priority is to focus on the important parts of what you need to get done. Keep your head held high and make every second count. Before you know it we will be falling into next semester. I hope you all had a wonderful first month of school and continue to focus on the main priorities this year. Thank you to all the staff that helped to straighten our building out with all of these new, and sometimes overwhelming, changes.

Changes in the School

Betty Wyatt

A lot of changes around the school have effected the staff and students at Spainhower. Something that changed around the building is the greenhouse. The greenhouse has been moved due to Early Childhood moving in to the end of the building. Early Childhood has been added, we have access to the upstairs, and there are plenty of staff and students in our building. We also have to be better role models for the Early Childhood program, and other people that come to our building, because if we start acting out it might trigger the little ones to start doing the same because they will think its ok. When speaking with Mr. Freeman he said, "Their class loves to play fun games. I'm happy with the wide open space, the small numbers in class sizes, and my colleagues." He is an awesome teacher and he is a great asset to the Spainhower building.

Ms. Anderson said, "She likes the student diversity. She likes keeping herself busy."

Zac (a middle school student) said, "He likes that there is a lot less kids, it is a lot quieter, and there are less problems. I like the new teachers because they are nicer. There are a lot less transitions."

Logan (another middle school student) said, "We moved upstairs and pre-school owns half of the school. The office has moved. I love being in middle school instead of elementary."

The Difference between AE and TLC

Mikayla Blackenter

Most of us have heard about AE since they have classes in our building. But what is AE? AE is Alternative Education. AE is another helpful program to help you succeed during your school career. TLC and AE are similar in that perspective. The difference between TLC and AE is that AE is just for high schoolers. Another difference between AE and TLC is that in TLC you’re able to have full days here. TLC is more individual. They focus more on the needs of the students. Meanwhile in AE, more students are able to be enrolled in these classes since students transition more frequently. AE tends to be a bit harder but allows students a transition between TLC and AE. AE is also credit recovery and is very helpful. One of the primary differences is that group therapy is offered to students in TLC. While all students in Marshall Public Schools are offered individual and/or group therapy if needed, all TLC students receive group therapy weekly. Additionally, TLC classes conduct a social skills class each day. AE and TLC are both incredible and whoever is in either should be grateful for it.

The HOOT House

Mikayla Blackenter

What is the Hoot House? The Hoot House is a comfortable house setting near Spainhower. The purpose of the Hoot House is to help others and even make us feel safe and give people the chance to have things that they aren’t able to have in their house. Let’s say someone doesn’t have running water, they can attempt to make time in their day to go to the Hoot House and shower and get all cleaned up. In the Hoot House, there is a washer and dryer, wifi, TV, food, drinks, anything that you would most likely have in your own house the Hoot House should have it. The Hoot House is open to the students in our community and their families. If you would like to go to the Hoot House, you may go there Monday-Friday (2:00 pm-7:30 pm.) In case you don’t know where the Hoot House is located, the address is 700 E Slater street. It’s a two story white house. Hopefully you don’t miss it. You can always contact Ms. Parton if you need anything else for the Hoot House. Occasionally there will be arts and crafts at the Hoot House. They won’t forget to update you. The workers at the Hoot House are also kind enough to help serve you supper around 5:00 pm. The Hoot House is just like your home away from home. Feel free to come visit the Hoot House!

MHS Homecoming Football Game

Betty Wyatt

On Friday,September 21 we had the Homecoming football game vs Fulton. The final score was 41-6. This would be the first time in many years that Marshall has won it’s homecoming. The game was filled with excitement. Jaylen Varner scored a couple of touchdowns including one 80 yard bomb. Senior Zavion Winn recovered a fumble at mid field to start a great drive that also ended in a touchdown. The game had many fireworks in it and it also ended with fireworks provided by Dr. Maher and the MHS Administration staff. The crowd was on fire everyone was cheering, and clapping. We finally won a homecoming game after 3 years!!

Home Works!

Mikayla Blackenter

As of last year, our school is doing something new called Home Works! which is replacing parent teacher conferences. For example, instead of going to school to have your conference, your teacher comes to you. You’ll be at your house with your parent(s) and talking to your teacher. It is a more comfortable setting which helps you express more by being able to ask questions, sharing your feelings, concerns, etc. in a more comfortable manner for you. Now it’s not something to take advantage of negatively. It still works the same as parent teacher conferences. You still talk about your progress in school, what you need to work on, your behavior, etc. We do have dinners at our school in honor of Home Works! The dinner on September 25th is the first dinner this year for Home Works! We normally have another dinner towards the end of the school year as well. All four elementary schools in Marshall, Spainhower, and Early Childhood participate Home Works! When the time comes for your conference, you can have it anywhere but the school. You can have it at your house of course, the park, anywhere that makes you feel comfortable and that is attainable.

Home Works! Family Dinner

Betty Wyatt

Every year the Home Works! Program hosts a Family Dinner to be held at the school. These dinners are held twice a year. The first Home Works! Dinner for Spainhower was held on Tuesday, September 25.

I interviewed Mr. Coslet about our Home Works! dinner and he said, “he thought the dinner went well all though it was little smaller than last year but it was very good. It was a very good bonding time with the students parents.

I also thought the dinner was really good! I honestly love when we have these dinners because our teachers get to sit and talk to our parents. I also agree with it being a little bit smaller but that's okay because we got seconds this year!!

I also interviewed Austin and he said “He loved the food and it was very fun!

Spainhower Activities

Sam Schneiders

Ready, set, hut! Activities are a student’s best friend here at Spainhower. We use activities as a strategy to help us build our personal skills and of course have some fun. What’s your favorite activity to do? Mine would be enjoying the extra activities during P.E. Activities vary from kickball, soccer, flag football, running, and mindset exercises. Most of these activities take place in P.E which is taught by Mr. White. Mr.White always plans a good, well thought out class period for us. My favorite activity would be kickball or soccer because it’s very fun and involves lots of teamwork. Extra curricular activities are a great way to build our physical and mental health. Regardless of the activity you do,remember that we all experience failure. Only the wise will realize that we tend to give up on the easy things when in reality those are the things that get us through the hard. Activities keep your mind pumping and your blood flowing. Sometimes we even go outside and have a kickball game with the middle schoolers. I think the idea of having these extra activities can help us communicate with each other in a positive way.

Insights in Service Learning

Sam Schneiders

We haven’t always been lucky enough to have someone there to show you how to become a successful adult. Well now you do! Service Learning is a class that has been taught for two years. Last year service learning was different from this year. Now you may be wandering what Service Learning is even really about. Service Learning is a class that helps you become successful. You learn how to take care of a house and how to work together to keep it looking presentable. You also learn how to nail an interview for a job. Not only do you learn these things for now, but you learn how to cook, clean and do laundry. Learning how to be an adult is a big step. I interviewed Ms. Boyer and she gave me some thoughts on her teaching methods. Ms. Boyer’s plans for this year are to teach her students skills that relate to real world things. She will teach them how to maintain a house and how to take care of themselves. The things that excites her the most about Service Learning is the fact that her students see the importance in learning how to be responsible. It’s not like geometry where you don’t get the point of it, this is something we use in our everyday lives. She said, “that it’s fun to see students who have never cooked before prepare a whole meal.” Service Learning has changed mainly because last year we focused on selecting our career path, but this year it’s more general and broad. Her main goal in service learning is when kids graduate high school and they move out on their own they will be able to maintain a house and not starve. Heilee, a high school student in Ms. Boyer's Service Learning class, is very encouraged by the curriculum taught. She thinks it’s beneficial because she will learn how to cook and count back change. She also believes that this class is important because it teaches her how to deal in the real world. Overall, Service Learning is a very helpful and full of many opportunities to get ahead in life.

Student Work

Mikayla Blackenter

From small projects, learning responsibility, to different teaching for each student, a few teachers in Spainhower have some plans for their students in mind. One of the middle school teachers, Mr. Hogan, is planning on getting some fish for his students in the classroom. He intends on teaching his students how to deal with their responsibilities such as making sure the fish are fed everyday, make sure they don’t feed the fish too much or too little, check everyday that the tank is clean, and that the fish have enough space to swim around. One of the great elementary school teachers, Mr. Freeman, that I visited with currently has three kids in his class who happen to be in different grades. He says since his teaching is scrambled he tries to do one on one with his students and has different teaching strategies. Ms. Boyer and Mr. Jacobi two high school teachers at Spainhower have their classes do debates. The reasoning for the debates is so when they “argue” it’s done correctly and they know how to positively get their side out or even their opinion with of course their valid research.

Social Story

Mikayla Blackenter

Everybody in the world has emotions, from the basic ones like sad, mad, happy, and scared, as well as more in depth emotions such as frustrated, anxious, and silly. But it’s how we deal with our emotions that tends to be the problem. That’s why in Ms. Boyer’s Social Skills class, we are writing a Social Story. The fun and great part is it is by her students! This Social Story, otherwise called Emotions, is specifically for the elementary kids. It will teach them their range of emotions, how and how not to deal with them, how to identify their emotions, and whether or not the time is appropriate to act on that emotion. Her class has given scenarios of emotions in the book such as “I got frustrated because I couldn’t figure out a math problem”. Then of course you have to solve that problem so therefore they also wrote in the book for that scenario “To keep myself from getting frustrated, I asked the teacher for help”. Being that this book is for the elementary students, they have to make sure that those students can understand it. We will also be including pictures of the scenarios so that the students that reading it can understand it more. Ms. Boyer’s Social Skills class is hoping that this book is helpful. But it can only be helpful if the students try to understand their emotions as well as learn appropriate coping skills.

Halloween Safety Tips

Mikayla Blackenter

Halloween is right around the corner! Here are some safety rules to help keep you safe and secure.

  • Rule #1: ALWAYS have an adult with you!
  • Rule #2: Carry something reflective or bright such as a glow stick so you can easily be seen by drivers.
  • Rule #3: If you are driving, eliminate any distractions in your vehicles so you can easily watch for kids as they are excited and could move in unpredictable ways such as running.
  • Rule #4: Keep watch for kids from 5:30 pm-9:00 pm as those are the popular trick or treating hours.
  • Rule #5: When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to help prevent trips, falls, or any further injuries.
  • Rule #6: Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals, or crosswalks.
  • Rule #7: PUT YOUR PHONES UP. Always pay attention to traffic. Mobile devices are one of the #1 cause of accidents.
  • Rule #8: Always walk on sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
  • Rule #9: Choose face paint or makeup when possible, as masks can sometimes block a child’s vision.

Shoutouts

Mikayla Blackenter

Shoutouts is something that Spainhower has to recognize good deeds that people have done. The purpose of Shoutouts is to recognize the good in people, if they’ve had a good week, good grades, happen to be a good friend, helped others, and many other good recognitions in people at Spainhower. It’s not just the students here that get a Shoutout, even the staff get Shoutouts! Shoutout! Shoutouts is something we all should enjoy and be grateful for. For most people Shoutouts make their day end up so much more better than what it started out to be or what it was going to be. We do Shoutouts every Thursday during the last ten minutes of our school day. Shoutouts is beneficial to all of us because it spreads positivity, makes people's’ day, puts a smile on their faces, and spreads compliments. For those long days, and sometimes long weeks, Shoutouts let us end the week on a positive note.

Holiday Community Carnival

Sam Schneiders

What’s Christmas without a carnival? On Monday, December 3rd, 2018 the Marshall school district will be hosting a magical event! The event is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Fun and cheer will be spread throughout MPS families, faculty, community, and staff. There will be cookies and punch provided for everyone to enjoy! Pictures with Santa will be taken by a photographer who has volunteered for the carnival. There will also be a holiday themed photo booth for you and your family to enjoy. You can participate in activities such as holiday crafts ,face painting, and Christmas filled games! There will also be holiday music that you can enjoy with your family and friends. This is the time to spread the love and spirit of the holidays. All these services are free and open to the community! Have a happy holiday!

Snow Days

Mikayla Blackenter

Bundle up! ‘Tis the season for snow days! It’s about that time for snow days to start coming back. But what is the reason as to why we have snow days? We have snow days whenever the weather is either bad, dangerous, or both. It helps us to feel safe and know that we’re comfortable. Hopefully you are comfortable at school. We do try not to have a whole lot of snow days due to make up days which can interfere with breaks or our summer vacation. Although we love snow days just remember that more make up days are to come. We of course can always make the best of it by being positive and grateful. On a snow day, most people don’t want to just sit at home and do nothing. You may want to do some activities to maybe brighten up the atmosphere and make you forget about the dreary weather for a bit. Well I’m coming to the rescue! I’ll be giving some examples or ideas on what you can do during your snow day. If you want to challenge your inner kid, you can build a pillow fort. Make it as big or as small as you want. Make a list of rules for your pillow fort. Or you could maybe be original and drink some hot chocolate and bake cookies. Who doesn’t like hot chocolate and some nice, warm, baked cookies on a cold day? You could even go out and build a snowman, have a snowball fight, make snow ice cream, which is amazing by the way, or make snow angels. There’s a ton of fun stuff you can do in the snow. Another fun thing you can do on a slow and dreary snow day is to have a movie night. Make your front room, bedroom, or wherever you’re watching a movie at feel like a movie theater if you want. Make some popcorn, get some pop, get nice and cozy. Then put on your favorite movie. You can always cook a special meal. Make that meal a snow day tradition. There’s all kinds of things you can do when it’s cold outside. If you want, you can also turn up the heat, put summer clothes on, and act like you are at the beach! Have a safe and snowy winter!

Perfect Attendance

Sam Schneiders

Missing school is for losers! Yeah I know what you’re thinking and yeah I am a loser too. Having good attendance can actually look really well on your record. Coming to school and doing what is needed in the classroom is a big part of learning successfully. I have missed so much school already and let me tell you, it’s not the smartest idea. One thing for sure is you get behind and then you have to rush to keep up with the rest of the class. I understand if you’re truly sick, but if you’re just wanting to skip don’t waste the time doing that. Get your butt up and come to school! One thing I have experienced while skipping school is that your mental health becomes unbalanced. Your mental health is hard to keep up with and you don’t want to do anything but sleep, which is unhealthy. School can be a very boring, challenging environment; however it is a healthy and successful setting. I can’t really give you the best advice for perfect attendance because I’m not even great at keeping up with good attendance. If I could tell you one thing it would be to appreciate. What I mean by to appreciate is don’t waste any time at all. My biggest accomplishment was that I didn’t mess around with my credits, meaning my senior year will be a piece of cake. Attendance can also determine your GPA (grade point average). Colleges often look for students who are good with staying in school and being on time. Another part of attendance is being on time. There are times where you wake up late and you miss the bus, possibly making you late for school. One thing you should know about being late is that you don’t need to make it a habit. Once you make being late a habit you’re going to do it everyday, than eventually start missing excessive days of school. If your attendance has anything to do with your sleep schedule, work out a plan with your parents or trusted adult. Sometimes sleep schedules can differ for older students because of jobs or after school activities. Perfect attendance is a good way to show your effort in wanting to succeed.

EOC and MAP Testing

Mikayla Blackenter

Towards the end of the school year, our schools have what is called the EOC (end of course exam) and MAP testing (measures of academic progress). EOC and MAP testing are important because it shows what is important for the teachers to teach the students. The EOC helps with college and career readiness. Below is a bulleted list on how you can prepare for the EOC’s and MAP tests:

  • Get 9 and a half hours of sleep
  • Eat a good and healthy breakfast
  • Study prior to the test
  • Drink water
  • Try and stay focused/calm
  • Come prepared
  • Stay away from stressors
  • Stay away from caffeine the night before
  • Come with a positive attitude

Student Work

Mikayla Blackenter

From having fun, to learning good choices, as well as gaining knowledge, our lovely teachers at Spainhower have excellent ways of teaching their students new things. Let’s start off with the lovely Ms. Boyer. Ms. Boyer’s IPC class has been reviewing the scientific method as well as collecting data and afterwards graphing. She let them choose their experiments but they had to be realistic experiments. One of Ms. Boyer’s students, Heilee, made a scavenger hunt for her experiment. She was going to see how long it would take the group with phones to go through the scavenger hunt and how long it would take the group without phones to go through the scavenger hunt. Blake said that it made the review more interesting because he got to pick his experiment.

In Mr. Coslet’s class, his students just got done learning about the Solar System. Mr. Coslet’s students learned about the Big Bang Theory. The Big Bang Theory is the theory of how the universe started. What they did was create a model on rotation. This model showed the Big Bang Theory and how it would of looked. Skylar loved it and was way into it. They all worked together on it and it only took them 10 minutes! They learned new things and really enjoyed it!

Mrs. Miller’s class did a small activity about the presidents. For example they learned the presidents’ birthdays, where they lived and were born at, how long their term was, etc. Jonathan said the best part about it was learning all the information. As you can see, our projects help us learn and hopefully understand more in a fun way. We can show that learning can be fun!

Holiday Project

Mikayla Blackenter

There tend to be plenty of families in our community that need help providing Christmas presents for their family. Our community is going out of their way to make sure that those families get their presents and can celebrate Christmas. For 40 years the Holiday Project has been going on. The Holiday Project is hosted by the Saline County Inter-Agency Council. Churches, organizations, and the community itself help to donate toys, food, and necessities. Toys for Tots has also helped to contribute some toys for the Holiday Project. All together there are about tens of thousands of dollars worth of donations! The idea behind this project is to allow families to get a little something for their family for Christmas. This year nearly 1,600 people were served!!

Ms. Boyer’s Service Learning class and myself, went to help set up the Holiday Project. The purpose that it served for us is learning not to be selfish and to lend a helping hand for the community. Before we got there we had to go over the rules that were set. We needed rules mostly to help us remember how to show respect and so that we wouldn’t step out of line. We helped set up the toy section of the Holiday Project. We helped with separating the brand new toys from the used toys. We separated the stuffed animals and put them into a different room, and put the baby toys into a different area. Have a great break! Happy holidays!

Mindfulness

Mikayla Blackenter

Mindfulness is bringing your attention to what is going on at that moment. A lot of the time mindfulness is used in a therapeutic manner. But what are the benefits of mindfulness? One, mindfulness can help with relieving stress. Mindfulness is also known to treat heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, and to improve your sleeping. A big benefit of mindfulness is it helps to improve mental health. It helps with depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Psychotherapists have turned to mindfulness and have seen great results coming a long with it.

Ms Boyer’s classes practice mindfulness on a daily. Her classes do a wide variety of mindfulness activities, such as yoga poses. These poses help to elevate us while de-stressing ourselves at the same time. Sometimes we’ll sit and do a mindfulness activity. For example, the dandelion activity. For this activity we are to close our eyes, pretend to pick up a dandelion that has gone to fluff, put every stress and worry on the strands of the dandelion, and then blow it all away. The purpose of our mindfulness activities is to help us transition to the next class with a clean slate. We do these mindfulness activities for 60 seconds (1 minute) and we do it after every class period. We do these mindfulness activities to help us de-stress for the next class. It helps us once again, have a clean slate for the next class. We’re likely to be more present with a clean mind. This means that we’re able to focus on what the teacher is teaching instead of those thoughts that have been overwhelming you for however long.

Reading Buddies

Mikayla Blackenter

It’s always nice to read a good book with a good friend. That’s just what I have been doing. For the past 3 weeks I have been reading to David. We’re teaching him to use his context clues in reading such as pointing out objects in pictures. I’ve been reading picture books to him. These picture books are shown to him to help him with observing his surroundings. When reading to him, he points out what he sees. For example, he’ll tell me if he sees any bugs, animals, people, objects, etc. He’s even able to tell me what time of day it is in the book. Normally every Friday David and I read to his class and they would do the same things he did when he read the book. When reading to his class, he’d have them tell us what they saw first or what caught their eye. It helps him to focus more as well. When pointing out your surroundings, it involves focus or those focal points. It’s helping him in the long run and he enjoys it.
