Marlington Elementary STEAM

What is STEAM?

All students kindergarten through 5th Grade will be participate in our innovative STEAM program. STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, provides students the opportunity to learn in an interesting and fun new way. STEAM opportunities for students help to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills through activities that encourage them to design, explore, question, build, and create. It is a valuable time for students to learn and practice those important skills needed in the 21st century. Students will meet once every three weeks throughout the year to investigate real world problems and use the design process to develop and tests solutions.

What do we do in STEAM?

Kindergarten- Students will learn about the basics of engineering and design. Students will learn how to draw and follow plans and construct items that are strong. Students will then design their own bug and a habitat for their creation.

First Grade - Students will learn about force and motion, simple machines and design features. Students will build a Leprechaun Trap using simple machines and then move on to build a themed Roller Coaster

Second Grade - Students will learn about Structural Engineering and how to build a good core structure for their projects. Students will start out designing a Zoo Cage then move on to design a structure to survive different weather events.

Third Grade - Students will learn how to apply area, perimeter and their knowledge of geometric shapes to become builders. Students will learn how to design their own city then take those skills and build themselves a Tiny Home.

Fourth Grade -Students learn about how video games, apps and robots work by studying computer science. Students will learn how to code using variable and loops and will work on creating their own game or dance video. Students will also work with robots to complete different tasks.

Fifth Grade - Students learn about several types of careers. Students will create a business and design a new prototype to help them in their career choice.
