Mr. Jeffrey Miller
Director of Speech & Debate

Mr. Jeffrey Miller is entering his twelfth year at Marist School. Prior to coaching and teaching at Marist, Jeffrey served as an Assistant Coach and Director of Debate at Fayette County High School for five years. Jeffrey has coached sixteen State Champions, twelve while here at Marist School.

During his tenure, Marist has qualified 71 students to the National Speech & Debate Association National Championship, 29 students to the National Catholic Forensic League National Championship, and 22 students to the Tournament of Champions.  Marist teams have finished top ten nationally eleven times since Jeffrey joined us in 2012 — 5th in 2014 (public forum), 9th in 2015 (policy and lincoln douglas), 9th in 2016 (policy and public forum), 9th in 2017 (policy), 5th in 2017 (public forum), 9th in 2018 (public forum), 3rd in 2019 (in public forum), 9th in 2021 (in public forum), and 5th in 2023 (in public forum).

Jeffrey is a three diamond coach with the National Speech & Debate Association which recognizes 15 years of coaching and his students have earned more than 45,000 points.  He is the recipient of the 2011 GFCA Peach Fuzz Coaching Award, 2012 GFCA Debate Coach of the Year, the 2013 NDCA Rising Star Award, the 2022 NSDA Southern Peach District Coach of the Year, the 2023 GFCA Speech Coach of the Year, a four time recipient of the NSDA Don Crabtree Distinguished Service Award, and the 2018 Georgia Debate Educator of the Year.  He was inducted into the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2023.  He is the only coach in the history of the state to receive every Coaching honor by the State Association.

Ms. Schirmer teaches:

Ms. Abby Schirmer
Associate Director of Speech & Debate

Ms. Abby Schirmer is entering her seventh year at Marist School. Prior to coaching and teaching Marist, Abby served as the Director of Debate at Stratford Academy for seven years and Director of Debate at Pace Academy for one year.  In addition to coaching a national championship policy debate team in 2011 and national runner up team in 2013, her teams have reached elimination rounds at virtually every major national invitational. 

While at Marist, her teams have reached elimination rounds at University of Georgia, Greenhill, University of Michigan, Chattahoochee, Samford University, Cypress Bay and Isidore Newman tournaments.  Additionally, Abby is one of the only coaches in the country to have a policy debate team win the Baker Award (given to the top policy debate team throughout the regular season) back to back. 

Abby is a one diamond coach with the National Speech & Debate Association, which recognizes more than 5 years of coaching and her students have earned more than 15,000 NSDA points.   She was the inaugural recipient of the 2011 NDCA Rising Star Award, given to the best national coach in their first five years of coaching.  

Mr. Chad Meadows
Assistant Debate Coach

Mr. Chad Meadows is entering his fourth season as an assistant coach with Marist.  Based in Kentucky, Chad works with our students in policy debate and public forum debate online and travels with us to tournaments.

Chad is the Director of Debate at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He has coached for the past eleven years at WKU, serving as DOD for the past five.  During that time, WKU has won seven national championships, more than any other collegiate program. 

Will Sjostrom  '20
Assistant Debate Coach

Mr. Will Sjostrom '20 is entering his third season as an assistant coach with Marist.  Will is an alumnus of Marist's debate program where he was one of the most successful debaters in school history.  He is currently a junior at the University of Georgia where he is double-majoring in Risk Management & Insurance and Political Science.
