Explorations, part of our award-winning Warriors BEyond programming, are designed to ignite a passion for learning and foster creativity. 5th and 6th grade students will experience Explorations, an interest based elective that will take place on two FULL days in May. Each Explorations session will last one hour with students exploring 4 sessione each day! All Explorations are hands-on, ungraded and focused on giving students the opportunity to learn more about a topic that intrigues them!

60 Minutes. . .

You have 60 minutes. You and your team need to create an entire newscast in 60 minutes. Plan, shoot, and edit the weather, the sports, current events, celebrity gossip, anything worth reporting in just 60 minutes. Will there be an exclusive interview? What about commercial breaks? Can you handle the pressure? Time’s ticking…

Balancing Acts

Design a figure which balances on your finger by adding weight on a wire below the finger. Making what seems impossible, possible.

Blue Man Group

Sound is Science and Science is Sound! Lets build some instruments out of everyday materials! Pipes, trash cans, buckets... flip flops? Yes, flip flops! How creative can we get while measuring tubes and playing music?!

Bullet Journaling

Boost your mental wellness (and organization!) with bullet journaling. You will learn how to start a bullet journal and techniques to use it to organize your thoughts and feelings, but also use your art skills to make it a unique journaling experience.

Clay Tray Par-Tay!

Create a shallow ceramic dish using a clay slab. Decorate your dish by imprinting textures with various objects, and glaze your piece with colors of your choice. Piece will be fired in the kiln and returned to students to take home.

Comic Book Heroes

Have you ever heard of Gil Kane, Will Eisner, or Jack Kirby? You should! They are some of the most famous comic book artists in the world! Will you be next? Students will get a quick explanation of how to draw super heroes in comic book form and then draw a one page comic book

Creation Station

Create to your heart's desire. Do you like making things out of duck tape? How about making friendship bracelets? Create your own note cards or wrapping paper with shaving cream and food coloring designs? Come join in the fun of creating!

Creative Writing

Do you love to write and craft beautiful stories and poetry? For 60 minutes you will have a series of writing challenges that will put your creativity to work! Bring all your great ideas and an iPad to a place where you will bring your own stories to life! You will then have the opportunity to participate in the "Writer's Chair" where you will read your creations to your writing peers!

DIY: Miniature House

Craft your own mini home using your architectural and interior design ideas. We’ll create three dimensional houses and craft the inside rooms and exterior details and finishes. Experiment with sculpture using mixed media on a tiny scale with huge results!

Dodgeball

Get your head in the game and get ready for an awesome dodgeball tournament! Are you ready to Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive & Dodge? Who will come out on top and be crowned the Dodgeball Champion of Explorations!

Fluffy Italian Architecture

Students will work in pairs. They will compete to see who can design and build a structure to the highest height using only marshmallows and uncooked spaghetti. All groups will be given the same amount of materials (1/2 bag of marshmallows and 1/2 box of spaghetti) and they must design and build the tallest possible freestanding structure.

Frisbee Golf

Frisbee Golf in our own back yard! 9 holes of one of the greatest past times you can find. We’ll learn how to score, learn terms like Par, Bogey, Double Bogey, Eagle, and most importantly, we’ll learn the etiquette that goes along with the game. Come out and get your Frolf on!!

Geocaching

You will get to learn how to stay connected with others around the world through geocaching! Learn about coordinates using a GPS to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches" anywhere and everywhere! We will stay local to either Mariemont or Terrace Park for this exploration.

Hip Hop Happiness

What could be happier than hip hop dancing?! Come learn a choreographed hip hop dance with Mrs. Bruck. Can't dance? Neither can she! But we'll have a lot of fun trying.

Kickball

Kickball is easy to learn, easy to set up, and fun to play; making it one of the most popular recreational sports in the country. Come enjoy some nice weather, laugh with your friends and see who is going to take the crown!

Love Kit Factory

Join the assembly line for Clutter 2 Care and help put together essential items for children in foster care, homeless or critical home situations throughout the Cincinnati area. Once assembled, use your artistic skills to decorate kit bags and cards with images and messages of love, kindness & joy!

Mission to Mars

Get ready for an out of this world experience! You will have an opportunity to dive deeper into the latest NASA Perseverance rover exploration. Then its your turn to utilize your creativity by building and launching bottle rockets!

Nailed It! Cake Decorating 101

Bring a little sweetness to your day! Enjoy live cake decorating demos and learn a variety of cake decorating and piping techniques. Then you will get to apply your skills in a "Nailed It!" themed cupcake decorating challenge!

Performance Poetry

Love poetry? Love performing? Let's bring our two loves together! Inspired by the phenomenal Amanda Gorman and other amazing poets, let's bring poetry to life. You can bring your own poem to perform, or I will have published poetry you can choose from to create your own performance.

Racquet Sports Supreme

Good at handling a racquet? Maybe a paddle? We’ll hit the courts at Mariemont, and weather permitting, we’ll play some tennis. Singles, doubles, maybe even some cut-throat. If weather keeps us indoors, we’ll play some Pickleball in the gym at ME. Either way, it’s going to be a great time to get out for some top notch competition.

Say Cheese!

Bring your iPad and learn a series of photography techniques to be the best photographer at ME! You will have the opportunity to put your creative eye to the test when photographing pictures and angels from all around the community. Learn the best editing apps and how to make your pictures truly come to life through a series of editing tricks and hacks!

Scavenger Hunt-AR Style

Scavenger Hunts are fun, but when we use Augmented Reality to do a scavenger hunt, it is becomes a hunt that can happen anywhere. We will try a pre-made scavenger hunt and even create one using AR.

Sensory FUN!

Do you like to play with slime? Are you curious about how they are made? In this session, you will get to make and decorate your own slime and flubber with gel coloring & glitters. When we are done, it is yours to keep and they can last for several months when stored properly. In case you did know what flubbers are, is it very similar to slime but thicker and stretchier.

Stay the Kid You Are!

What are those things from your younger childhood that often get overlooked? You are never to old to play games such as tag, capture the flag, and gaga. Not into being outdoors, how about those things you loved as a kid playdoh, puzzles, board games, card games and more.

Stop Motion Movies

We will be creating Stop Motion animated movies using many different props. You will either recreate a story/movie, or create an original script.

Superstars of the Stage!

We will dive right into rehearsing a song from a musical complete with singing and dancing. You will get a real experience of a fast-paced and exciting rehearsal. If you love being on stage, this exploration is for you!

Taiwanese Night Market Games!

In this one hour session, we are going to explore fun games people play at the night market in Taiwan! Night markets are really common in many Asian countries, it is very similar to the fairs in America, but it occurs every weekend. Come join us and play some Taiwanese games (such as jianzi, diabolo, ring toss) and if you are up for some challenges, brain teasers will be waiting for you!

To Infinity and BEyond

Students will work individually to use an empty 16 oz water bottle to create their own rocket. Using the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar, they will cork their water bottle rocket and test the height of liftoff. How will different measurement combinations of the two combined materials impact rocket liftoff? Can you determine the best fuel combination to reach infinity and beyond?

Trash to Treasure Jewlery

Learn about the Haitians' culture of transforming trash into treasure by creating your very own jewelry using recycled materials. Look at Haitian jewelry for inspiration and use your creativity to repurpose bottle caps, pop tabs, cereal boxes & more into beautiful pieces of art to wear!

Based on the popular game show, you have a Minute to Win It! Complete various challenges using common household items with a trusted partner in under a minute. At times you may play solo, and other times you may work with your trusted partner. Bring your concentration, steady hands, and positive energy. Remember: every second counts!
