11/13/2025 - The CNMI gubernatorial race is starting to take shape with former Senator Vinnie Sablan, who is currently the Chief of Staff for Lt. Gov. Dennis Mendiola, writing to the CNMI Republican Party seeking their nomination to be their candidate for governor.
“After much reflection and consultation with family, friends, and community members, I believe this is the right time to step forward and serve our people. Our Commonwealth faces a critical moment, marked by significant challenges yet also presenting great opportunities for growth, renewal, and unity. I am confident that with the right leadership, we can steer a course towards stability, accountability, and prosperity for future generations,” Sablan wrote in his letter to the party.
He added, “Above all, my goal is to restore confidence in government by leading with integrity, humility, and a steadfast focus on the needs of our people.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of the CNMI told Marianas Press that it has yet to receive letters of intent for the gubernatorial ticket. Letters are due on February 1, 2026.
Independent candidate for Governor, Rep. Blas Jonathan “BJ” Tenorio Attao, congratulated Sablan on his announcement. “My running mate, Edmund Villagomez, and I welcome an open, civil campaign, and we wish Vinnie well on his effort to secure the Republican party’s nomination,” Attao said in a statement to Marianas Press.
He added, “We remain focused on listening to the community, addressing its needs, and working toward a stronger, more sustainable future. We are committed to continuing our service as legislators and, if given the privilege by the people, as the next Governor and Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth.”
