What is MATMC?
The Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College (MATMC) is a tuition-free, early college program of Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency (Marquette-Alger RESA), that enables students from Marquette and Alger Counties to enroll in up to 44 college credits at Northern Michigan University or Bay College, while earning a high school diploma and a technical certificate from the Michigan Early Middle College Association (MEMCA) during a five-year program of study.
What is the experience of being a MATMC Student?
- Students are provided a gradual, supported transition to college while accelerating the attainment of an in-demand career credential (see programs of study below).
- They commit to a 3-year program of study: during grades 11 and 12, students enroll in a combination of high school and college classes, during grade 13 students are enrolled in a full-time college schedule at NMU or Bay College.
- Admitted students range from those students that struggled, or were at-risk of dropping out of high school, to those 4.0 students that need additional support in their transition to full-time college enrollment.
- Students attend success seminars and participate in learning activities based on the Jobs for Michigan's Graduates competencies to ensure college, career, and life readiness.
- Through out the enrollment, students experience career exploration, such as Talent Tours, Internships, CTE Skills Competitions, and enrollment in high school CTE courses, MARESA CTE courses, or a Health Occupations course.
- Each student volunteers their time recording at least 100 hours with organizations or programs of their choosing.
- Many students serve as peer mentors to incoming students and leaders in their home high school and throughout the community.
