1D Forces

Objectives

Students Will Be Able To...

Understand the idea of Inertia and Newton's 1st Law. Articulate how Newton's 1st Law applies to a car going around a turn and the use of seat belts
Explain the relationship between forces acting on an object and the acceleration of the object and understand that forces must be external
Translate from an acceleration vs time graph to a force vs time graph, and from a force graph to an acceleration graph
Create force diagrams from descriptions of physical situations
Solve word problems involving vertical forces using Newton's 2nd Law
Distinguish between static and kinetic friction and use the coefficient of each to solve problems involving friction, including friction on incline planes and friction with an object where the applied force increases or decreases the normal force
Recognize that every force comes in a pair and these forces are equal and opposite in direction. Demonstrate understanding that acceleration may be different depending on the mass of the objects, but force is always constant
