Frequently Asked Questions

Why should my child be in PBL?

PBL is extremely effective as a method for engaging students in their learning. Students have the choice to work on topics and issues relevant to their lives, as well as learn vital work and life skills necessary to their success in school and beyond.

How many students can this class accommodate?

Like most traditional education classes, PBL will be capped at 30 students maximum.

What happens if more than 30 students apply?

After application, there will be a two-step process. First, the PBL teachers will be in contact with your child's 6th grade teacher. If they qualify for PBL, the next step is making sure PBL will fit the child's schedule. If there are more than 30 students who qualify, selection will come down to a lottery.

How are students graded?

Students do not receive a letter grade. The projects are on a pass/revise system, meaning the student either passes the project or has to revise it. Students create an online portfolio where they are asked to reflection on their strengths and weaknesses and include artifacts to prove their knowledge and growth.

Will my child be behind in English and Science if they aren't in PBL next year?

No, quite simply, your child will have learned invaluable real-world skills and developed a work ethic and a quest for knowledge most students don't have. The technical reading your child will do throughout the year far exceeds regular English and Science classes. Also, the class still has an emphasis on English and Science skills. It's important to keep in mind that content within most subject areas is spiraled and covered each year.

Is there an 8th grade PBL class?

There is not currently an 8th grade PBL class.

Can my child be removed from this class?

If there are concerns about a child's learning style, whether from the parents, the student, or the teachers, the first step will always be parent-teacher contact. From there, the best course of action will be decided based on the student's needs. This class is meant for students who have a unique learning style. If both parents and teachers agree that your child would thrive best in a traditional learning environment, a move will be made.
