Over the course of several weeks, students in Mrs. Kelly Kelley's class were provided with a guest speaker who introduced them to some financial terms and goals. Topics included price earnings ratio, dividend yield, diversity in investments, and an opportunity to purchase/invest in the stock market with the intention of learning how it works.
My students looked forward to having Mr. Miller come each and every week. Mr. Miller gave them a challenge where they invested $3,000 in the stocks of their choice. They picked 2-3 stocks and could also keep up to 1/3 of that investment in cash. Then each week, Mr. Miller would go over what happened in the market with their stocks. The students were able to see what was going on in the world and how the world events affected their picks. At the end of the first four weeks, Mr. Miller handed out prizes to the top investors. He then lets students reselect their selections based on what they had learned so far. It was amazing to see the knowledge they had gained in just the first four weeks. During the second half of his time with us, just about every student had positive growth in their stock pick after just four weeks.
On the days Mr. Miller wasn’t here, it gave me such joy to see the students hurry into class to sit down and see what their stocks did every day before class even started. They were completely invested into the lessons he taught - not just when he was here but on all the days he wasn’t as well. That is what made it such a powerful lesson. It was far more impactful than any textbook. For Mr. Miller, a successful, prominent businessman from the community who gave his time freely, his sole goal was helping these kids have a step in the right direction as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives. While he taught them about stocks he really stressed how important it is for them to save their money and prepare for the future. I will forever be grateful that my students were blessed by Mr. Miller’s gracious generosity.
Here's what Samantha had to say: Mr. Miller had a lot of information for us to absorb. Honestly, I think I learned more about stocks in the short period of time he taught our class than I have in the past classes I had that discussed stocks.
Here is what Dominic had to say: Mr. Miller was a great teacher. I always loved the days he came in. And when he was there, Mr.Miller was a talker and could pull you right in and get you thinking about stocks and saving for the future. He was always very nice by bringing us stuff to snack on like apples, when he comes to our school. I am very grateful for him, our class, and his time he spent with us. Thank you.
