LITERACY PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Manheim Central School District aims to establish a clear path for learner success by providing a robust English Language Arts curriculum. Through instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language, we empower learners to become effective communicators who read independently, think critically, write confidently, and engage with others respectfully and responsibly.
Our ELA curriculum promotes equity in literacy education, recognizing that children shape their identities and understand the world through the texts they encounter. We strive to offer authentic and meaningful reading and writing experiences, along with teaching the essential foundational skills necessary for reading development.
At Manheim Central School District, we believe that reading has the power to transform lives. Reading is fundamental to acquiring knowledge, cultural understanding, and achieving success in life. The process of learning to read is complex and involves various factors and stages that influence each learners’ development.
“Teaching depends on knowing what students know and can do, and then determining what they need.” (National Education Policy Center, 2018)
