  • The day it was yesterday

  • The day's weather

  • The current season

The Author's Message

Today we are going to be thinking about the Author's Message.

We will consider these two questions;

  • Why did the author write this text?

  • What does the author want people to learn?

How will it work?

First we will watch the clip that explains what the author's message is about.

Then we will find a buddy to work with. (Think about who your collaborate well with - MAHI TAHI)

With you buddy you need to explore the image and the text with it.

You need to consider What the author wants us to think about, and what they want us to learn? Talk to your buddy about this (KAIKORERO)

Explain your thinking on your page. Explain what you think, and why you think that [because...] (WHAIWHAKAARO)

We will share back some of our thinking to the class.

Word Work

With me

Today we will be looking at the 'ed' suffix/ending.

The suffix 'ed' when added to a word changes it to the past tense.

The suffix 'ed' has three sounds; /d/. /t/. /id/

Let's find out more.

Literacy Learning - Writing and Reading - SPEECHES

Before we get started we are going to do a 'word dump'.

On one of the sheets of paper you need to write down all the possible SPEECH TOPICS that you might want to write a Speech about.

To write a great speech we need to take the time to make a plan for our speech. [Kairangahau].

You can make a copy of the slides that we need, or I have some paper copies. If you are doing it on your chromebook, please move it to your WRITING folder.

What to do:

  1. Choose some topics that you think you could write a great speech about and add these to your planning page.

  2. Now that we have some topic ideas, we need to think about the purpose of our speech. What style of writing might be best? Do we want to explain how to do something, do we want to persuade people of our point of view, do we want to inform them or teach them about our topic, or do we want to entertain them with one of our own experiences?

Explanation texts

Do you want to write a speech that EXPLAINS how something works or how to do something?

Arguments/ Persuasive Texts

Do you want to write a speech that PERSUADES someone or shares your reasons why you think we should/shouldn't do something?

Information Reports

Do you want to write a speech that INFORMS or teaches someone about a topic that you are interested in?

Recount

Do you want to write a speech that RECOUNTS one of your experiences to ENTERTAIN them?

3. What do you already know about your topic? Add this to your planning.

4. What new information do you need to find out?

5. Where could you search for this information?

6. Now that you have a plan, be a researcher and find out more about your topic.

7. Have a go at planning out your speech using one of the hamburger templates provided.
