Day One
1. Glue the template into your Writer’s Notebook.
2. You will be given 15 minutes to work on your list silently. Color if you finish early.
3. Share (small groups) and then you will get another 5 minutes to add some more ideas. (You will get more ideas after sharing!
4. Go through your list and put a star (*) next to the first five items that make you most excited. Then, turn to a partner and share these five items.
Day Two
1. Today you are going to “try out” some of the ideas on your list. It is not about finishing a piece, but rather trying out several ideas until you find one or two that work.
2. Go back and review the five items you starred yesterday. You are going to free write about each of these ideas for 5 minutes to get a feel for how they will work as a writing topic.
3. A timer will be set for 5 minutes. Start writing about your first item. (“brain dumping.” ) Dump all your thinking about this idea down… no worries about mechanics and conventions! This is just about getting the ideas out of your heads and on to paper.)

Publishing Idea:
Think back to the time you got your first pet. Maybe you got a playful puppy or a scrappy old rescue hound or a retired racer. Maybe you got a curious kitten or a moody old cat. But that pet changed your world forever.
Now, tell this story from the perspective of the pet writing a journal of the first few days in your new family.
Focus on writing it from the perspective of your pet. Use vivid language and precise descriptions.
