The days of students silently working independently from textbooks at desks neatly arranged into perfect rows are long gone! In today’s classroom, you’re more likely to see students standing or sitting together around tables or huddling on the rug, gesturing and talking excitedly, drawing diagrams on tablets, sketching ideas on whiteboards, or gathered around computers.
Collaborative learning is a 21st-century skill and when students work collaboratively, they become involved in a process that promotes cooperation and builds community. New ideas are generated as students give one another feedback. Collaboration creates a culture that values every student’s strengths and an environment that believes that everyone can learn from one another.
These hats give us an opportunity to see things from different perspectives before we make a decision or solve a problem.
So those are the Thinking Hats in a nutshell. We are going to use the idea of the Thinking Hats to discuss ideas around our class shared novel, "Once."

1. List some of the reasons Felix considers himself ‘lucky’ (p30)?
2. List things you think he could complain about.
3. What indications are there – recognized or missed by Felix – that something is terribly wrong?
4. What explanations does Felix come up with to make sense of things? –
Why would the truth be the furthest thing from Felix’s mind given what he is witnessing? Is it a blessing or a curse for him to be able to explain everything or reason an acceptable outcome?
1. Make a title "The Learning Pit"
2. Draw a learning Pit on your page.
3. Find pictures of people in a magazine to glue into your pit. Glue the appropriate thoughts above each person.
4. Glue the feelings under the appropriate parts of the pit.
Divide your page into 3 sections.
Research using google images the differences between -
