California Takes a Stand for Hair Loss Patients
At NACPS, we're committed to keeping you informed about legislation that directly affects your role as a medical wig provider. One of the most promising developments this quarter comes from California: Assembly Bill 496 (AB 496) is advancing and could be a game-changer.
AB 496 proposes that insurance companies in California be required to fully cover cranial prostheses—commonly referred to as medical wigs—for individuals undergoing chemotherapy and other forms of medically related hair loss.
This bill has successfully passed through committee, indicating strong support and momentum toward becoming law.
Why This Matters:
For years, medical wig providers and their clients have faced uncertainty, inconsistency, and denials when seeking insurance reimbursement for medically necessary prostheses.
If passed, AB 496 would:
Mandate insurance companies cover cranial prostheses as essential medical equipment
Reduce out-of-pocket expenses for cancer patients and other hair loss sufferers
Empower certified cranial prosthesis specialists to serve more clients
Legitimize the role of the medical wig industry in healthcare and insurance systems
NACPS Is On It. We are actively tracking this legislation and will keep our California-based members updated at each stage of the process. But we're not stopping there. NACPS is expanding our legislative monitoring efforts nationwide, so that providers in every state can stay informed and prepared as similar bills emerge.
