Abstract
This research investigates the alarming rise of violence within Indonesia's Islamic Boarding Schools (pesantren), which have long been revered for fostering moral, ethical, and spiritual growth. In recent years, these institutions have come under scrutiny due to incidents of physical and sexual abuse involving both students and educators, sparking public concern and prejudice. Using Lickona's character education theory as a framework, this study examines the social and institutional factors driving these issues, alongside the violation of Law Number 18 of 2019 that mandates the protection of students' rights. Employing a multifaceted approach, the research integrates literature reviews with data from National Commission on Human Rights and Violence Against Women and the Ministry of Religious Affairs to uncover systemic causes, evaluate the impact on students, and propose evidence-based reforms. Ultimately, it seeks to address this pressing issue and restore pesantren as safe and respected spaces for education and character development.
