Steel drum band is a class offered in the first semester to students in grades 9-12. In this class students will learn the history, proper technique, and proper care to playing the steel drums. Students will have the opportunity to play all the instruments in the steel drum family including other Latin and American percussion instruments that make up what is called the engine in a steel drum band. The steel drum band plays a diverse selection of music from classical transcriptions, rock/pop, calypso, and other styles native to the Caribbean culture. Students do not have to be percussionists to be in the steel drum band, the only prerequisite is that they are a member of the concert/marching band. The steel drum band typically has two afterschool concerts a year, but has been asked to do community events in the past.
