Thank you to Melissa Gocha, Jason Alberts, and Chris Pomatto for coming in on our last General Session to give a presentation on professional dress and what to do during an interview. Our members as well learned a valuable lesson on professional dress, on which colors are appropriate depending on the type of interview you're going into. They stressed the importance of first impressions, some examples include, arriving 15 minutes before the interview starts, being kind to everyone, and having a firm handshake! From our Vice President, Logan Apsey after the interview, he said, “It was a very useful presentation that anyone could have used.”

FBLA Christmas Party
Friday December 6, we had a Christmas party at Richie Sutliff's House! There we baked cookies that we would sell at school for the March of Dimes Bake Sale this week. We also wrapped up teddy bears that would be donated to the Winnebago County Correction's Teddy Bear Drive. They'll be given to children in the area hospitals on Christmas Day. Thank you to Richie Sutliff for hosting the party at his house and to all who came to help!

FBLA Celebrates American Enterprise Week
President Jimmy Carter first proclaimed Free Enterprise Day in 1980 to honor the system that comprises the backbone of the United States economy. It is a day that symbolizes the freedoms granted to American citizens under the free enterprise system. The free enterprise system is the driving force behind capitalism and it gives individual Americans the right to make their own economic choices. For example, instead of the government controlling individual business and corporations, American citizens get to control their own businesses.
The American free enterprise system also gives American citizens the right to entrepreneurship. This means that all legal American citizens have the right to take a risk and start their own business, the right to create partnerships and agreements with other businesses, and the right to make a living through the occupation of their own choosing. In general, the free enterprise system allows Americans to conduct their business with minimal government interference. Aside from taxes and minor safety regulations, the American entrepreneurs are allowed to conduct their business as they wish.
During American Enterprise Week, we also recognize and celebrate the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice: they have laid down their lives so that we can be free. This week, we salute the men and women of the armed forces by collecting money for Folds of Honor. Folds of Honor provides educational scholarships to the children and spouses of our fallen and disabled service members while serving our nation. Illinois FBLA Fall Retreat
Stillman Valley’s Future Business Leaders of America attended the Illinois FBLA Fall Retreat on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Bloomington, IL. Members who participated in the Retreat were: Jesus Arias, Amanda King, Richie Sutfliff, Martin Martinez, Genesis Myers, Natalia Contizano, Logan Apsey, Aidan Taylor, Tyler Kubiszewski and Doga Ozkaya. The agenda for the retreat was comprehensive and kept the members very busy. On Friday., Nov. 1, FBLA departed Stillman for Bloomington, IL. Their first stop was at Illinois Wesleyan University. Upon arrival at the University, students were given a tour of the facilities. The tour was arranged by Mr. Ed Liegl who heads up the Career and Counseling Center at the High School. Special thanks to Mr. Liegl for making the arrangements! The members had a great time and the tourended with the students having their picture taken with the school bear. Following the tour, students headed to their hotel. After checking in, members had dinner, took a swim in the pool and then spent the night playing games and getting to know each other better. On Saturday morning, the members checked into the retreat and participated in many events. The keynote speaker, Mr. Jim Sharpe, presented the theme for the Retreat. He talked about “overcoming fear” by taking a three-step action approach. Through storytelling, he provided the group with excellent examples of how others have learned to overcome their fears. When asked about her experiences of the day, Natalia Contizano stated, “I had fun learning and working with other FBLA groups!” Members had the opportunity to participate in the “Iron Coyote” challenge, which took up a large portion of their time. They also participated in business workshops that focused on job interviews and what to do after you get the job. Jesus Arias stated, “It was fun meeting new people and seeing what the workshops are like.” Members were encouraged and challenged to actively participate in the workshops. Stillman’s Amanda King and Richie Sutliff took on the challenge!

FBLA March of Dimes "Pretzel" Fundraiser
FBLA members at Stillman Valley High School are selling chocolate covered pretzels to raise money for March of Dimes. March of Dimes is a world-wide organization that helps mothers with prenatal care as well as birthing complications. As part of the fundraising for March of Dimes, Stillman’s FBLA will also be promoting educational activities in November to create more awareness to the needs and the work of March of Dimes.
Chocolate covered pretzels are being sold for $2.00. All proceeds are given to March of Dimes. If you want to purchase pretzels to support March of Dimes, speak with any officer, member or adviser. With your help, FBLA will be able to provide donations for March of Dimes to help them continue with their awesome work with pregnant mothers.
