Communities of belonging plan for everyone’s involvement at the start. A key concept from architecture, Universal Design, does just this. Universal Design is “the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design” (North Carolina State University, n.d.). To rephrase this, Universal Design attempts to create a product or space that everyone can access.
Consider this… have you ever used closed captioning? While closed captioning makes videos accessible for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, closed captioning can be helpful for people in many other situations. Have you walked through slidings doors at a grocery store? These doors make it easier for people with physical disabilities to enter or exit a space and they can also make it easier for people pushing grocery carts to do the same!
This week, you will watch a video that explains Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and another video that shows Universal Design in action. You will also review a poster about Universal Design.
