This semester, you will begin a journey into the Dimensions of Belonging identified by researcher Erik Carter and his colleagues (2021) through interviews with people with disabilities and their families. As peers you play an important role in promoting the belonging of students with disabilities in your school. By learning about the Dimensions of Belonging, you will become more aware of how your actions and the actions of those around you impact the sense of belonging of others, especially people with disabilities.
So… what is belonging and why does it matter? Belonging is a feeling of being an important part of a group. Someone might feel like they belong at their job, on a sports team, at their school. Belonging is a critical part of the human experience.
Unfortunately, people with disabilities have been excluded throughout history. They have not been given the opportunities that lead to belonging in their communities. Peer to Peer is part of the work that is attempting to change that history of exclusion and move towards inclusion. As peers, you have the power to choose to include people with disabilities now and in the future.
This week, you will read about belonging and watch a video about the evolution of inclusion.
