This week focuses on people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The readings for this week focus on what it means to be deaf or hard of hearing as well as strategies to effectively communicate with those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The video for this week highlights the story of a young woman named Rachel. Rachel’s story emphasizes the importance of presuming competence, or believing that someone is capable. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, hearing sounds and words is helpful for children as they learn to talk and understand language. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing might miss some or all of these sounds and have trouble with speaking, reading, school success, and social skills. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing must be provided with opportunities and targeted support in order to thrive.
