Being an effective peer involves being mindful of the language and symbols you use surrounding disability. This is a way to show respect, as you would for any other friend.
Functioning labels such as “high-functioning” and “low-functioning” have been used in the past to describe autistic people. Many autistic people find these functioning labels to be inaccurate and harmful. This week, you will read one person’s perspective on functioning labels.
Symbols are another important form of communication and we must be mindful of their use. The puzzle piece symbol has historically been associated with autism. There is recent debate, however, between those who support and those who object to its use. In this week’s video, you will hear from Paul Micallef about the puzzle piece controversy.
