ZOLLHOF, a tech incubator based in Nuremburg, Germany hosted a three-day “Digital Tech Summit 2019” from October 11th to 13th. The event consisted of a digital technology forum and a hackathon event, attracting more than 800 corporate participants and students from around the world. Feng Chia University was the only Asian university to participate in the hackathon competition, and has won the second prize with its outstanding performance.
The themes of the hackathon, which were jointly proposed by 4 well-known German companies: Nürnberg Versicherung, Siemens Healthineers, Adidas and Nürnberg Messe, aimed to tackle the challenges faced by the companies in the fields of mobility, sports and health. Participants were expected to work across disciplines in order to find potential solutions within three days.
Participants formed 20 teams on the spot. Three students from Feng Chia University, Chen Kuan Ho from Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (College of Information and Electrical Engineering), Liao Ying Chia from Department of International Business (College of Business) and Low Soon Yung from Department of Economics (College of Business), have joined two teams respectively.
Team “My Fit”, where Kuan Ho and Ying Chia belong to, proposed an idea to use the 3D modelling technique to measure users’ feet size, which in turn lowers the return rate of online purchases. Their innovative idea has been awarded the “Best Technical Award”, which is equivalent to the runner-up award. The product has received the attention of Adidas’ product development department and inspired Adidas to conceive a new business model. Currently, the team collaborates with Adidas for further prototype development, test, and future commercialization.
Soon Yung and his teammates from team “Fairy Trail” have used machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) technique to facilitate the matching between exhibitors and visitors of a bioorganic food fair. Their solution was designed to reduce the visit time and increase the number of visitors.
The three students are very grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the international contest with the support and sponsorship from iSchool, College of Business, and College of Information and Electrical Engineering. They are especially thankful to the chair of Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science – Dr Nien-Lin Hsueh, the director of Global Village of Business Education and Industry-Academic Extension Service – Dr Hsin-Yu Liang, and the director of AACSB International Accreditation and Innovative Business Teaching Office – Dr Yi-Fang Chiang for their guidance and advices on smart operation in business innovation across disciplines.
