Biophilic Design

Spring 2021

What is biophilia?

Biophilia derives from the Greek mythology language. Philia meaning ' love of ' ; bio meaning ' life ' . It means to love life or living things. There is a scientific hypothesis, called the biophilic hypothesis. Scientists describe it as the urge human naturally have to be close to or interact with life or other living things. You could think of it as coexisting with the environment around you.

Experience the Adventure

  • Biophilia has increased since the global pandemic and has inspired our school to take part in the sparking trend. Our school has chosen to partake in Biophilic Design in many different forms. From our hydroponic system to our outdoor classroom. Each grade level has been tasked to work on different projects, all surrounded by the thought of biophilia. The meaning of our projects are to improve the schools looks, and make comfort of the students and staff, as well as help and support our community. These classes are something that lots of students look forward to. It teaches and influences kids to start biophilic design process not only at school, but at home too.

  • A child's mindset differs greatly compared to an adult's mindset. They think very differently, and this effects the way that each group defines under the means of biophilia. Children naturally have the tendency to interact, or to learn new things that are presented to them. While adults are more close minded. They typically have a hard time changing what they've done for a consecutive amount of time. So it's easier to teach a child biophilic customs, rather than teaching it to an adult. A child being brought up to learn the meaning of biophilia and what it does to help our environment, can help make a mark on the world.

  • On major thing that is a huge effect on earth is the enormous carbon footprint, us humans have left behind. Our carbon footprint is all the greenhouse gases we create and emit into the atmosphere. It's extremely toxic to our environment, and it contributes to a lot of the climate change that is causing global warming. That's where biophilia comes in. Biophilia is the nature around us that we can become one with and live harmoniously with. Biophilia comes with sustainability, which causes less stress on the environment. Biophilia provides green spaces, an abundance of new greenery. This can help reduce our carbon footprint, and it can regulate the temperatures of buildings around us.

THE TITLES BELOW WILL BE ADAPTED TO REPRESENT THE ACTION PROJECT DESIGNS REPRESENTED BY EACH GROUP BETWEEN THE LITERACY CLASSES (LANGLEY / WILLIAMS) AND CAREER CLASSES (ELLER). THERE WILL BE A SEPERATE PAGE FOR EACH PROJECT TEAM THAT WILL MATCH THE DESCRIPTION BELOW ON THE HOMESCREEN WITH THE GROUP ACTION DETAILS FROM THE GROUP PLANNING FORM.

We plan to make a cleared out space that is functional for learning. It will serve as a classroom for students, to assist them in learning while still interacting with the environment around them.

In our group action pursuit, efforts will be made to clean and revitalize the outdoor classroom, allowing for students to once again study and hold class within the safe and clean environment of the outdoor classroom.

In our group project, we will make the pond look presentable and pretty, but we will also teach about the pond and why it's important.

We could paint the hydroponic system to make it more pleasing to the eye. We could possibly get a better filter for the system. We could research what type of plants grow well in this system to absorb the Carbon Dioxide. We could use the waste that is filtered out from the pond as fertilizer for the garden.
