Danville Public Schools (DPS) served 424,500 meals through its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) which began on April 1, 2020 and ran through August 21, 2020. Meals were prepped by Child Nutrition staff at three school locations, loaded onto school buses and the DPS Food Truck, and then distributed by Transportation staff at twenty-three (23) sites strategically located throughout the city.
The SFSP is administered by state agencies in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is designed to ensure children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. The program serves children eighteen (18) and younger in communities of need.
During a normal school year, the SFSP kicks-off in June, in conjunction with the beginning of summer vacation. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of schools in March, the division launched this service early so that there would be no gap in service for students. “At the end of the day, it's about feeding as many students as we can,” stated Phillip Gardner, Director of Child Nutrition Services. “The pandemic forced us to think differently, unconventionally, and from a new perspective in order to deliver meals to our students. Our meal distribution program is a true collaboration and would not be possible without dedicated staff in our Child Nutrition and Transportation Departments."
About the Summer Food Service Program:
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) sponsors must provide the program to all eligible participants regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. Sites are placed in the community where children receive meals in a safe and supervised environment.
The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has been assisting the Danville City School Board in its search for a new Superintendent. The process began in July when the VSBA presented a timeline in which a new Superintendent will be named.
Since July, the school board has held a public meeting, asked for community feedback (survey) regarding the qualifications of the next Superintendent, and then shared those qualifications, as well as their own, with the VSBA in order to start the search process.
Applications were due to the VSBA in August. Below is a Profile Summary of the applicants. The next step is for the school board to conduct interviews with candidates - the interview dates will be announced at the regular school board meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 17, 2020.
We will provide additional updates as we move through the selection process.
