Mrs. Underwood's preschool class had a special visit from Averett University's Head Basketball Coach, David Doino and several of his basketball players! Galileo held its first PBIS celebration last week! Lots of activities and food! Popcorn, snow cones, donuts, spirit beads, board games, video games, cornhole, can jam, relay races, football, and a hand paint station for students to place their handprint on a glass wall agreeing to live up to this year’s theme “Be the Difference.” #everchildeverydayeveryclassroom
Our very own Marcie Murphy, the DPS Balanced Literacy Coordinator, has a Facebook page called Reading with Mrs. Brooksie. She reads to classrooms on a daily basis and posts the videos to Facebook. This week she had a guest reader, Mr. Wayne Mayo, Principal of Woodberry Elementary. The GW Concert Choir will have their first performance on Sunday, September 29th from 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at High Street Baptist Church on 630 High Street, Danville. They have the honor of performing in “An Evening of Music” along with Clarissa Knight, Reverend Voight F. Hairston, and Daryl McClean. The event is free and open to the public. The students at Schoolfield Elementary were delighted when the Danville City Police Officers arrived to serve breakfast in the school cafeteria this week. Officers greeted students in line and dished up some hot pizza breakfasts. The guest speaker was Natalie Hammond who was wounded during the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14, 2012. DPS students and faculty got brand new t-shirts to wear to celebrate National Gear Up Week! We tracked down Empress Sanford and Summer Guill, Biology teachers for George Washington High School, rocking their t-shirts yesterday. Also, pictured are Kendra Hatchett, Gwyn Stone, Linda Staylor, and Jaime Emmel at the Danville GUV meeting. The back of the shirts say all the things that being a part of Gear Up represents. To start the 2019-2020 Gear Up year off right, staff met with students during all lunches to distribute brand new t-shirts explaining exactly what it is we do as Gear Up students and had the students sign their name to follow the 1-2-3 Go Initiative! The goal is to Prepare, Apply, Pay, and Go to college! Students also received their scholarship booklet explaining the great perks of using scholarships to help pay for college, including the amazing scholarship being offered by Gear Up! #everychildeverydayeveryclassroom
