The Schoolfield Elementary cafeteria was packed with GRANDPARENTS! Schoolfield held their annual Grandparent's Day celebrations on September 5th and 6th. Grandparents were welcomed to come and have light refreshments with their grandchild and participate in a fun skills based activity.
The guest speaker was Ms. Constance Covington, the Director of the Constance “Grandma” Covington Youth Center at Cardinal Village. She spoke on the topic of How Grandparents Can Become Involved in Grandchildren’s Education. Danville City Mayor, Alonzo Jones , also spoke to the grandparents about how they can positively impact their grandchildren’s academics and be their role models. In the pictures below you will see Precision Machining students at Bonner working with DCC Instructor, Tim Robertson. The students are making a part using the new milling machine. Should students choose advanced manufacturing as a career path, they can then go into the 2-year Precision Machining program at GWHS, obtain their certificate, and directly enter the workforce. If the student desires to continue, he or she can attend DCC and get their degree in advanced manufacturing. All this done with mostly no student loan debt, thanks to the Gene Haas Scholarship that is managed by the Danville Public Schools Education Foundation. The scholarship covers tuition, books, and supplies. DPS is creating pathways to employment for our students, even at the middle school level.
The 2018 United Way campaign deadline has been extended until October 11, 2018. To date, DPS has raised over $7,200 of our $15,000 goal, with 50% of the sites having turned in their donations.
