During their regular meeting on Thursday evening, the board made the following recognitions:
National School Lunch Week, October 10-14
School Bus Safety Week, October 17-21
Director of Career and Technical Education Beth Smith and Work Based Learning Coordinator Gwyn Stone for their work with the Career Choice Expo, which took place on September 28 & 29 at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex. In those two days, 313 middle school and 248 high school students from DPS attended the expo and learned about more than 65 different careers and organizations to assist as they plan for their futures.
Smith also recognized the GWHS NJROTC program for their recent second place overall win at the Bassett High School 10th Annual Drill Competition held in September. The GW Drill Team placed as follows 1st place Unarmed Squad (JV), 1st place Unarmed Squad (Varsity), 1st place Armed Squad, 2nd place Armed Individual, 2nd place Unarmed Platoon, and 2nd place Overall.
School board members were recognized for their credits earned in the VSBA Academy.
The board heard the following communications:
Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Natalie Halloran gave a vacancy update from human resources.
Chief Financial Officer Andrea Gillus presented the accounts payable warrants.
Chief Academic Officer Takiwi Babalola gave an update on the promotion and retention policy, as well as the parent conferences that took place earlier this month.
Literacy Specialist Amanda McKinney gave an overview of DPS’ Reading Endorsement opportunity in partnership with Averett University, which allows for teachers to receive college credit by completing a semester-long literacy program.
Board Member Charles McWilliams gave an update from the policy committee meeting.
The board took the following actions:
Approved personnel recommendations brought forward by Dr. Halloran
Approved finance reports brought forward by Gillus
Approved updates to the Student CORE Handbook, which are reflective of updates in codes required by the Virginia Department of Education.

Cross Country teams compete at home
The middle school, Galileo, and GW Cross Country Teams competed in the 2022 Greater Danville Metro Cross Country Championships on Wednesday, October 19.
The middle school girls' team finished 1st place, and the middle school boys' team finished 3rd place. Bonner Eighth grader Jonesha Wilkins finished 2nd place in the middle school race. Colton Underwood came in 4th place.
Galileo dominated the race, with 8 runners medaling within the top 15 finishers. Girls: Carol Anne Garrett (1), Rowan Kirk (6), Maya Herndon (7), Ava Wray (9). Boys: Alex Gomez-Hernandez (1), Jackson Herndon (2), Jalyn Jones (3), and Jackson Easley (14).

GW golfer earns All District Honors
George Washington High School’s Ella Payne was the only golfer from the school to garner All Piedmont District honors this year. After playing the season with majority boys, she was voted by district coaches as Honorable Mention All Piedmont District. Congratulations, Ella!

Eagles complete recruiting visits
Coach Cody Perdue set up another great recruiting visit to the NC State vs. Florida State game earlier this month. The Eagles were able to meet the schools' recruiting coaches.

Dental and Nursing HOSA students in Mrs. Smith and Mrs Argyrakis classes honored and celebrated faculty and staff Breast Cancer Survivors: Ms. Dillard, Ms. Coles, Mrs. Melton, Mrs. Argyrakis, Ms. Cobbs and Ms. Lamberth, Mrs. Turner and also Warrior Friends, Sisters and Aunts!
Theatre visits Park Avenue
Virginia Repertory Theatre, formerly Theatre IV, visited our school today to put on a special musical performance entitled, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The special performance based on the book written by Carol McCloud was a pure delight for students and staff!
Studying Native Americans at Gibson
Students at Gibson Elementary in Ms. Bambury's class explored how Native Americans related to their climate and environment to secure food by analyzing arrowheads found on Ms. Bambury's family farm. Students acted as archaeologists analyzing artifacts by handling the arrowheads themselves to make observations about how they may have been used by Native Americans.
RISE Academy student wins big
Christie Yesalavich, a Middle School Career Investigations teacher at Taylor Virtual Academy, sponsors a Reading Incentive each quarter where students read books of their choosing and provide a written summary. For every summary submitted, they are entered for a gift basket of goodies, which also includes a $20.00 gift card to a business of the winner's choosing for students who are going the extra mile in reading. This quarter's winner was DeAveon Epperson, whose favorite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney.
Super students, teacher, and staff member of Schoolfield for October
At Schoolfield’s October PTA meeting, super students, super teacher, and super staff member were recognized. Each month teachers nominate a student from each grade level to be recognized as a super student for exhibiting the three R’s (Being respectful, being responsible, and being ready to learn). The students who were nominated can be seen in the link above. Schoolfield not only celebrates their students but their teachers and staff members as well. Ms. Ruth Brown, a 1st-grade teacher, was nominated by faculty, parents, and students as the super teacher of the month. Ms. Sheila Scott, Kindergarten Paraprofessional, was nominated for a super staff member of the month, Both faculty members were presented with a certificate.
Ms. Rosenbaum’s class had perfect attendance for the 2nd time this year! Way to go!
DFD visits Westwood
Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Bartee's, and Mr. Smith's classes participated in a Firefighter Presentation & a Fire Truck Presentation at Westwood. We appreciate Danville City firefighters Steffan Scearce and Chance Bartee for their demonstration, as well as the Wednesday morning crew from Station 2 for showing and explaining how the fire truck works.
Writing in PE
At Westwood Middle School, students are starting each PE class with a writing prompt designed by Ms. Ellis and Coach Perdue.
Eagles complete recruiting visit
GW Football Coach organized another recruiting trip for the Eagles - this time to the Duke vs. UNC game!
Projects in Mrs. Duncan's class at Woodberry
Mrs. Duncan's 5th grade student is working hard on designing a marble run from recyclable materials using the concepts of gravity, inertia, force, motion, and geometry. She also completed her Coat of Arms representing her current hobbies, hopes and dreams for the future, and the people who support her through her endeavors.

PBIS Pack Your Bag Incentive at Schoolfield
Schoolfield students who showed positive behavior for the month of October were nominated by their teachers. The administration at Schoolfield chose 130 students at random to be announced on the intercom to come “pack their bag” with lots of goodies. The goodies included pop its, emoji key chains, and bookmarks with reading strategies. We LOVE to celebrate our Jaguars!
Digital Footprints at Park Avenue
First graders in Mrs. McDonald's class are exploring what information is OK to be shared online and learning that the information they share online leaves a digital footprint or "trail." Students learned to chart personal and private information that Ellie the Elephant and Mervin the Mouse posted online about themselves while in computer science with Mrs. Sowers.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Westwood
To celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, each hall was assigned a country to explore. We were asked to share the amazing culture of each country and to dress up in their colors to show some pride. Miss Summers' 7th Grade homeroom class won the spirit competition representing the country of Ecuador.

Schoolfield celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Schoolfield hosted their October PTA meeting this week and celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. At the PTA meeting, a Hispanic Heritage presentation was shown that highlighted many different influential Hispanic individuals. Parents, students, and teachers participated in Hispanic heritage activities that include coloring wings to make a mural, a word search, and a crack-the-code activity. Several students also participated in a Hispanic Heritage book study that involved the students reading a book by a Hispanic author or that include Hispanic characters. Millianna Hunter, a 5th-grade Jaguar, presented her graphic organizer during the PTA meeting that included details about the book she read.
GWHS homecoming next Saturday!
On October 19, the Varsity Football Eagles will be playing Magna Vista for their Homecoming game at Averett University's North Campus at 7 p.m.. All fans are encouraged to get their tickets early through GoFan, as this game is likely to sell out. Fans are also strongly encouraged to bring lawn chairs in case the stands fill quickly.
