DPS celebrates Red Ribbon Week!
Several schools celebrated Red Ribbon Week, a national drug prevention education and advocacy week, with a spirit week! Check out some photos below from our elementary schools. Below: Park Avenue held a "Superhero Day" on Tuesday. Second Column: Park Avenue held a Decade Day on Friday, while Johnson's Principal Mr. Kevin Bowman dressed up as an alligator hunter. #GoGators! Last column: Gibson observed "mixed matched" day on Wednesday, and Johnson students dressed up for Halloween!
Red Ribbon Week at Westwood
Westwood Middle School partnered with RASAP, the Danville Police Department, and Danville Community Engagement on Thursday to provide information to students about drug and alcohol use and their impact. Students wore marijuana and drunk goggles to see how someone under the influence may be impaired while trying to complete different activities. Throughout the week, Westwood had daily themes for students to engage in, including red day, senior citizen or decade day, future career day, twin day and hat day, and they had a great time! Students signed the Red Ribbon Week pledge and received red sunglasses to show their pride. Shoutout to Ms. Kristen Harper-Edwards for organizing all of the events for Westwood students this week!
Schoolfield Book-r-Treat
Students at Schoolfield Elementary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week with a Book-r-Treat on Friday, October 29th. Students dressed up as their favorite book character and received two free books and sweet treats donated by parents, teachers, and staff. Each student received a fun math activity to take home and complete with their parents. Today was a great day for students and their families to celebrate Red Ribbon Week together at Schoolfield Elementary School.
November is Mental Health Awareness Month at DPS!
Danville Public Schools is partnering with Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services to provide trainings and programs to DPS students, parents and staff all month long. These activities include resource fairs at our middle and high schools, training in Identity, Acceptance and Terminology, More than Sad training, and an elementary-level presentation on supporting mental health and social emotional learning. Chalk Talk - NJROTC Inspection 2021
On this week's Chalk Talk, We travel to GWHS for an inside look at the NJROTC inspection 2021. The unit is tested on everything from their uniforms to their knowledge of the United States Navy.
GWHS NJROTC wins drill meet
The Fight’n Eagles have again performed extremely well with a win at the Gretna “Hawks” High School Drill Meet this past Saturday (Oct 23).

Our Girls Cross Country team won the Junior Piedmont Cross Country District Championship today in dominate fashion placing 5 girls in the top ten. Lead by 2nd place overall winner Jonesha Wilkins. The District Championship Trophy will be delivered next week. 4th- Kaylee O’Brien, 5th- Kristi Eugene, 6th- Memphis Moore, 7th- Hannah Mitchell.
Galileo Theatre Guild to preview one-act play
Galileo Magnet High School will be performing a preview of this year's entry into the VHSL One-Act Play competition next Thursday at 7 p.m. at the O.T. Bonner Auditorium. The play, "Overtones," tells the story of two women attempting to stay polite...and their inner voices which are not. Come see two different casts give their interpretation of the same short play!
FEV Tutor Webinars
FEV Tutor will hold family and student, as well as educator, webinars with Danville Public Schools in November. The two family and student webinars will take place on Wednesday, November 3 at 6 p.m. and Thursday, November 11 at 6 p.m. The educator webinar will take place on Tuesday, November 9 at 6 p.m. See the graphics for registration links.
DPS is holding our first ever Holiday Card Contest!
Danville Public Schools will be hosting a Holiday Card Contest for our 2021 Holiday Card. All students K-12 are invited to design and submit a holiday card for DPS to use this year. From November 1 to November 22, we will be accepting entries to homeroom/first class teachers and via email to ldavis2@mail.dps.k12.va.us. First place will receive $200 and use of their design for our DPS holiday card. Second place will receive $100. We ask that principals please spread the word! Use our flyer, include the contest in your announcements and newsletters, pass this on to your teachers. We appreciate your help!
Mark your calendars for Family Engagement Day!
The Communications and Community Engagement Department is very excited to announce our first Family Engagement Day in celebration of Family Engagement in Schools Month! The goal of this event is to reach the school community, have parents connect with district office staff, and inform families of DPS resources available to them, all while children are participating in fun activities and games. This will be held on Saturday, November 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at G. L. H. Johnson Elementary for all students and their families. DPS resource tables will include Curriculum and Instruction, Adult Education, Student Support Services, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Parent Liaisons. The DPS food truck will be on site serving free meals to DPS students (adult meals are $4). The Danville Public Library will be on site with their mobile book unit. Other activities include a resource scavenger hunt (with a grand prize raffle!), music, the Lu Interactive Playground, and more! Spread the word!
Park Avenue Fall Musical
Second grade students at Park Avenue performed a "Fall Musical" for their families. Some of the songs they performed were: "There's a Hole in my Bucket" and "Coming Around the Mountain."

Forest Hills welcomes special reader
Kate Clatterbuck, a contestant for this year’s Miss Danville Volunteer pageant, came for the second year to talk and read a book to the first and second graders at Forest Hills Elementary! This year the students discussed their dreams with Kate. Kate then shared the nonfiction story Mae Among the Stars. Kate also graciously donated books about powerful voices to the first and second grade classroom library at the beginning of the school year!
Fun in Mr. Cox's music class
Second graders at Forest Hills Elementary School are playing boomwhackers to the song Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. They are learning about performance etiquette, keeping a steady beat, and playing instruments within a group setting.
Successful Family Fun Night at Bonner
O.T. Bonner Middle School's Math Department hosted a Fall Festival event, sponsored by Title I, on Thursday, October 28. This event exemplified the collaboration between school and family. The Bonner family rocks!
Donut Donations to Gibson
This week, E. A. Gibson Elementary School received donations of sweet treats from two local churches. Dan River Church and West Main Baptist Church donated donuts, as well as gave personal letters to each staff member from the congregation. Gibson is so thankful for their community partners!
GW Eagles visit Schoolfield
On Wednesday, October 27, four varsity football players and the head football coach from George Washington High School visited Schoolfield Elementary School to encourage students to say no to drugs and bullying. As part of Red Ribbon Week, Wednesday was designated as favorite team day to “team up against bullying,” and it was a great day for members of Schoolfield's favorite team, the GW Eagles, to visit.
Averett Service Project at Forest Hills
Averett University’s 101 students came to Forest Hills Elementary school on Saturday, October 23 to complete a service project. The students painted one of the fifth grade cottages. This service project truly benefited the school's fifth grade students by providing them with a warm and welcoming atmosphere for their last year at Forest Hills.
At Bonner Middle School, Ms. Jamie Gibert's eighth grade Theatre class is learning how to apply FX make-up. Students pictured are Chyann Santiago, Amyrah Campbell-White, Aaliyha Brower, Gavin Robertson, and Emma Brown.
