For the 7th year in a row, Galileo High School has been named a W!se Blue Star School for the 2018-2019 academic year.
To earn this coveted award, a school must have achieved an 80% passing rate on their Financial Literacy Certification Test and have EITHER a majority of students on a given grade level take the test OR achieve a minimum average score of 85%.
Through Galileo's personal finance instruction, teachers have given students vital knowledge about personal finance. They have also provided them with the tools they need to become financially capable young adults.
Congratulations to Ms. Vater, Mr. Funderburk, and our students! JOB WELL DONE!!!!
Students in GWHS' Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG) class were honored to have Mr. James Cousins, owner of Abe Koplen Clothing Co. and Mrs. Lakesha Deshazor, owner of Divine Boutique, come speak to them about being business owners. Mrs. Deshazor is a local entrepreneur and Mr. Cousins began his career journey working for the company he now owns. They also spoke to the students about proper business attire, benefits of mentorship, and how to overcome obstacles.
Mr. Cousins and his assistant, Mr. Darrius Johnson, taught the males how to tie ties right before Ms. Fullerwinder, JVG specialist, gifted each student with his own tie. Young ladies will be receiving pearls. #partnershipsmatter
Now that I have your attention, these are Jello Worms, made with whipping cream and raspberry jello. The liquid is poured into flexible straws and when set squeezed out of the straws! Looks deliciously weird, Lendy Kessee!

My day started of with a bang this morning. The DPS Education Foundation was awarded a $4,500 grant today from the Walmart Foundation as part of the store's Grand Re-opening festivities. The Walmart Foundation awarded over $40,000 today to local organizations and we were lucky to be one of them, along with the Danville Police Department, The Danville Fire Department, and the Wendell Scott Foundation.
Special thanks to Mrs. Doris Wilson and Mrs. Crystal Cobbs who braved the cold and attended on behalf of the Foundation and the School Board. Principal Larry Marks and some Bonner students were invited because they will be receiving $500 as well. The GW Color Guard also attended and presented the colors.

Area cross country teams wrapped up the local circuit Wednesday night with the Greater Danville Metro Championships at Angler’s Park in Danville. With growing interest in this event in recent years, the field of schools was expanded to include teams from outside the Pittsylvania County boundary lines for the first time, creating an 11 school contest. The team that rose to the top was VHSL 1A powerhouse Galileo Magnet High School and the local phenom Caleb Wright from Chatham High School.
The varsity girls race hosted 57 girls and was paced by two time first team all-state runner Casey Allen of Altavista. Allen completed the new course layout in a time of 21:37 to pull away from Galileo’s Morgan Whitley late in the race. This was Allen’s first win against Whitley this season and the dual of Allen versus Whitley is shaping up to be an intriguing regional showdown November 4th. Completing the top 5 overall finishers behind Allen and Whitley were Angel Lin of Galileo, Sophia Hearp of Tunstall, and Savannah Carlsen of Chatham.
In the team competition, Galileo could not be stopped on either side as both the boys and girls brought home top honors. The Lady Falcons placed 8 runners in the top 16 and posted a team score of 23 to finish ahead of Chatham (66), Tunstall (86), Cumberland (99), Dan River (100), and Magna Vista (156). After Whitley (2) and team captain Angel Lin (3), Galileo placed 5 additional runners within 30 seconds of each other to capture the team title for the second straight year. In this Galileo pack was Camila Rodriguez (12) who finished as the top freshman in the event. Caroline Woods (6), Christa Zakhary (8), Sydney Stone (9), Kiki McLaughlin (11), and Camila Rodriguez (12) will join Whitley and Lin in the postseason as Galileo pursues its first athletic team state championship title.
The varsity boys race was led from start to finish by Caleb Wright who let his running do the talking in what would be his final race in the area. Wright, a senior, is the top ranked cross country athlete in the VHSL 2A classification and is pursuing to place an exclamation point on the end of his brilliant cross country career by claiming the individual state championship title November 16th at Green Hill Park in Salem.
Chasing Wright in the varsity boys race was sophomore standout Cole Harbodin of Galileo. Harbodin is emerging as the local cross country heir apparent to Wright after finishing only 30 seconds behind to claim second. Harbodin lead the Galileo attack for the 5th time in 7 races this season; pretty impressive for a school that placed medals upon Owen Wood (3), Jamison Mantooth (4), Blake Warren (8), and Jackson Herndon (10) who all contributed to the team score of 25 points to win the meet for the third consecutive year. Following the Falcons in the team scoring were Altavista (62), Chatham (96), Hargrave (108), Tunstall (110), Dan River (157), and George Washington (174). Other local notables in the boys varsity race include Ashton Weaver of Tunstall who finished 5th overall with his time of 18:09 and Dylan Kirk of Galileo who also placed in the top 15 in a field of 77 runners.
Looking ahead, local schools are poised to make their presence known in the postseason. Galileo Magnet High School has the best chance to garner postseason accolades as both the boys and girls teams are ranked first in the VHSL 1A Region B classification. The Lady Falcons are the second ranked team in the VHSL 1A State classification and are projected as a four point underdog to George Wythe High School who currently sits in the top spot. The Galileo boys team is ranked fourth in the VHSL 1A state classification and is chasing the heavy favorite Parry McLuer. The Regional Championship will be hosted at Angler’s Park in Danville, Monday, November 4th at 2:00 pm. The State Championship will take place Saturday, November 16th at Green Hill Park in Salem.

"Hi, my name is Katey Roshetko. I'm a reporter for WDBJ7. How are you?"
"I'm good, Katey. How are you?" Jonathan Fain, the athletics coordinator at George Washington High School, said on the other side of the phone.
"Well, I'm not going to lie. I'm a little stressed out," I answered. "We had a last minute cancellation for our October 25th pep rally and we're desperately looking for a new school to host us. We were wondering if George Washington High School would be willing and able to get us out of this bind."
"The 25th? You mean like in a week?"
"Yes...."
"Okay," Fain said. "We'll see what we can do!"
And that's how this WDBJ7 FFE Mornin' Pep Rally came to be!
After one desperate phone call, one incredibly gracious school, the George Washington Eagles, got their teams together to host our 9th pep rally of the 2019 season.
The band and the cheerleaders came out in full force dark and early Friday morning. The weather was chilly, but the atmosphere was hot. Check out the full WDBJ7 video.
