Virtual Enterprise students (35) participated in the annual Virtual Trade-Show in NY on April 17th and demonstrated the most efficient, well conceived, and effortless demonstration by the 2 firms the students created and operated daily this year. DPS students competed with nearly 4,500 students from the U.S., Romania, China, Bulgaria, Brazil, Bermuda, Germany, and other countries across the globe in areas of Elevator Pitch, Branding, Commercial, Website, Salesmanship, Booth Design, Newsletter, and other business related concepts. The 2 companies created were WorldWide, Inc. and EyeTech, Inc.
Although some results are not available at this time, students were successful in the following categories!!!!! Will keep you posted!!!

On Thursday, April 18, 2019, the O.T. Bonner National Junior Honor Society held its annual Induction Ceremony. The club inducted 26 new members who were selected based on their academics, leadership traits, citizenship, community service, and character. A quartet of George Washington High School orchestra students provided music for the program. The new members heard speeches from current president Aniyah Tarpley. The Induction Ceremony included two keynote speakers from GWHS: Carrie Agnor, the current president of the GWHS National Honor Society and Faith Odom, the Captain of the GWHS basketball cheer squad. Members of the GW chapter of the FBLA recently spent time at the Boys & Girls Club. The young children there thoroughly enjoyed the time our students took to hang and play with them. It's those little things and memories that can stick with a child and make a difference!
The group played dodge ball, basketball, football, and hung out together on the playground. Even Mrs. Price got into the fun and shot some hoops!

The O.T. Bonner National Junior Honor Society participated in a Bonner Cleanup Day on Monday, April 29th. Members picked up trash and cleaned the campus as part of their community service requirements. What a great crew of students!
In celebration of School Library Month, students from GWHS visited the Danville Public Library where they were treated to a tour, had lunch, and created their own mosaic tiles.
DPS held its annual Graduate of Distinction Ceremony at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research on Tuesday, April 30, 2019. Eighty-four students from Galileo Magnet High School and George Washington High School (GWHS) were recognized as having achieved this honor.
The Graduate of Distinction program recognizes student accomplishments in five categories: academic achievement, attendance, citizenship, community service, and participation in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. Students must accumulate points in each of the five areas in order to qualify.

The top eight Graduate of Distinction students who attended elementary school(s) in Danville Public Schools for all six years (K-5) received $500 each. Those students included: Taylor Grace Murphy, Hannah Christine Anderson, Nyjal Ehirim, Macy Elizabeth Jones, Leah Jamilah Warner, Alexis Marie Watlington, Taylor Joyce Moorman, and Hao Phong Tran Truong.
Grace Holland and Georgia Daniel both received a $1,000 Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) STEM scholarship offered through the IALR Foundation. The scholarship is intended to support a graduating senior who expresses a desire to continue his or her education, specifically, in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Jacob Thomas Black received a $5,000 Essel Propack Manufacturing Excellence Scholarship which recognizes area high schools seniors for their community service, academic performance, and leadership skills. The scholarship program is intended to serve students and encourage enrollment in institutions of higher learning. It aligns with two focus areas of Essel Propack’s Community Involvement Strategy: promoting community service and building tomorrow’s leaders.
All of the Graduate of Distinction students who will be attending a college or university this year were awarded a $200 scholarship.

Congratulations to our very own Wesson Claiborne-Felder! Wesson won the Community Employee Engagement Award and the Energizer Bunny Award at the United Way Annual Meeting. Because of her fundraising efforts, DPS was recognized as a 2018 Pacesetter. Thank you to every DPS employee who participated in the campaign!
The GWHS Orchestra will present its Spring Pops concert on Friday, May 10 at 7pm. The concert will be held in the GW auditorium and is free to all. The students will be performing Bohemian Rhapsody, Best of Queen, The King of Pop, Moon River, Drag Me Down, and others. Please come and help us celebrate our year's accomplishments and bid the seniors farewell!
The Adult Career and Education Center is excited to announce that three of our students gained their GED Diplomas this week. Pictured are Joe Adams and William Runyon. Martina Calvey, not pictured, also received her GED Certificate. All three of these students have future plans that could not happen without obtaining their credentials.

There are still some beautiful, and functional, items left over from this year’s Fine Arts Night Pottery Sale. Prices are very reasonable, with most mugs and bowls for $7.00 a piece or 2 for $12.00. All proceeds go to prizes and entertainment for next year's Fine Arts Night. You can peruse them today in B-101 (under the library), or stop by the E wing at the beginning of next week.
