GW band receives superior ratings at assessment
On Thursday evening the GWHS Symphonic Band received ALL SUPERIOR RATINGS at their District Assessment in Blacksburg. The students behaved and performed wonderfully! "I really couldn't be more happy for them and be more proud of the hard work they put in to receive such a wonderful rating with such a challenging program," Band Director Cody Kesling said.
Middle, high school orchestras receive superior ratings at assessment
The GWHS Orchestra and Bonner Westwood Honors Orchestra traveled to Heritage High School in Lynchburg for the VBODA DISTRICT 6 assessment on Friday, March 11, where they both received superior ratings and represented Danville Public Schools well. Congratulations!

GWHS Indoor wins Apex, NC
On Saturday March 5th, the George Washington HIgh School indoor Percussion Ensemble won their class with a score of 73.1. These students have worked very hard this week, performing concerts and preparing for assessment and an indoor competition!

Park Avenue students learn ukuleles
Park Avenue 4th and 5th graders have completed a unit on ukuleles. Miss Smoot’s 4th grade class shows off their confident skills with 3 chord switches in the song “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors.

Third grade students from Woodberry Hills enjoyed smores! Each student had to read a minimum of 4 books and also do a write-up! Students enjoyed the sticky, yummy treat and are ready to read more for the next incentive! Go Wolves!

Mental Health America has plenty of resources that employees can use to learn about mental health, including online screening! The screening is one of the easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Visit their website for several different screening tests to learn your status then learn about further options based on your results.
Gibson students learn about fossils
Gibson 1st Graders read a story about the Grand Canyon and discussed fossils. They made connections to what was read by becoming paleontologists for the day. Students found fossils (chocolate chips) in their cookies (dirt).
Forest Hills students create art to be included in a DMFAH exhibit
Three Forest Hills Elementary fifth graders created artworks inspired by African-American female artist Alma Thomas that will be included in the Danville Fine Arts and History Museum exhibition honoring black history and women history month. Their paper mache sculptures made during art club will be on display as well as their clay sculptures made during class. The show opens Sunday, March 13, 2022 at 2pm to the public. Free admission to attend the museum this weekend and support our Forest Hills bears!
Gibson students learn about Native American cultures
Students in 2nd grade created Native American Shelters after learning about the Native American cultures from past and present (SOL 2.3). The students began by researching the homes, transportation, region, food, and occupations, followed by creating a poster describing important details of their tribe (homes, transportation, region, food, occupations). Lastly, they made homes of the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains and the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest using clay, sticks, cardboard and a variety of materials.
